Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

We sure do have your storm, Vicki!
Horrible, awful, howling COLD...until Monday...

I put the horses out for 2hrs today, just b/c the yearling was getting silly and even HE wanted right back in!

Chickens, too, they INSISTED they wanted to go out - ran straight to the barn for goodie patrol, as usual.
Then, stood there, huddled in a group - I had to CARRY them back home!! poor babies!

Debbi - those babies are so CUTE!!

You may want to hold onto both for a bit longer?? They do tend to change drastically as they mature!!! Like I've said before, too bad they are not like Mr. Potato Heads, you could interchange the parts to how you want them to look!

I have some that will help this type of hen, and others that will help another type. Hense, too many roos; most of which are just plain culls at this point!

Yeah, if I could do that I would have at least one perfect one out there, and a good portion of another one.

Look what I received in my egg basket today

I had to take the pic with a flash b/c it's so grey and dark here...sorry so over exposed (there are cream cochin eggs in the 2nd from right row...), BUT that new eggie is the FIRST egg from one of my young pure Jeane girls!

It is not a dark chocolate like that super dark one someone showed the other day, but it is one of my darkest - a glossy dark terra cotta color!

So excited!!

Congrats on the eggs! I have noticed today, when I finally got FOUR eggs

, from 8 hens, that the ones who free range also have the darkest shell color. They also have a much deeper yolk color, which was no surprise, but shell color?? Could it just be coincedence? The girls that stay in the run (their choice, I offer them out every day) are second year layers, the out girls are pullets yet. Just wondered if anyone else sees this?

Yes, one on the left has skull, on the right is vaulted. I don't try to breed towards the vaulted skulls after what happened to my one Blue Partridge pullet! Yes, I could put this pic over there too, glad you mentioned it!

The breeder I'm buying from tells me she's about 50/50 on the vaulted. Doesn't breed for or against it. I sure am glad Ella has a skull! The Marans and the Ameraucanas are giving her a good going over these days!!!

Glad she has a skull if in with Marans! My Silkies would all be dead or bald by now if they were housed together! Talk about your "Mean Girls"!

I wish you could see the compost my neighbor moved with the bobcat the other day. I set the compost piles in about a year ago and after doing a few test digs with a shovel thought it was ready, but its the richest and blackest compost! Its gonna be perfect for the plants.
