Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks Donna!

I have mixed feelings about the nipple waterers and if I were to go that route would want those little catch trays that attach to them to hold the water that spills....or would like to use something like the auto cup waterers, but make them myself on a slightly larger scale...My birds are such water hogs I would need a billion nipples or cup waterers when they are that tiny...so I'm just hoping I can get a bit of direction on making a bit bigger cups that are fed from barrels like you have...
Where did you end up getting your nipple waterers?
If you figure out how to catch the water let me know... that is my big headache in the growout pens.... BTW the new babies I just hatched... when I put them in the brooder with a nipple system they found it right off... you should have seen those tiny babies JUMPING what must have seemed like a foot to get that drop of water

it was so cute and funny.....

BTW I made a little test brooder heater with the flexwatt... I can't get the temp up without a brooder light

I have it on a dimmer switch am thinking that maybe the problem.... IDK

I sure will...shouldn't be too hard...they sell some with a little cup catcher thingy...so I would think it would be easy to adapt one from some pretty simple supplies

I was just thinking... we eat at KFC a lot! and they have those reusable cups for the sides.... maybe that would work.... I have thought about a trough to catch the water underneath and the babies could use it to reach the nipples.

I never eat there...really I don't eat out much at all...I prefer staying out in the country where I belong as much as possible

What do they look like? I'll see if i can find you a pic of the ones with the little attachment piece so you can see what they came up with and adapt from there

those look like they would be pretty easy to adapt! If you were to make a wire circle to fit up under the ledge of that...and then attach off of that ring a couple of "arms" that would go up and attach (kind of like the plastic pieces you see in the pics on that thread)...probably to your pipe since it would be the most stable then you would be set. That little lip is what will make it a breeze. the bonus is that you could pop them out when they got old and replace them, or to empty them in case they ever got dirty. Basically you be making a harness of types for your container

Go to ebay. lots of good deals on the big 6 qt. bowl models. Make sure you get the Kitchenaid with the steel gears. For a bit there, they had other than steel gears. An older model is fine too. My 6 qt. bowl model is 28 years old ansd works wonderfully! Get the model with the lift mechanism, instead of the one with the tilt head if you want the most power.
Best,
Karen

Nope- not me then!

We do have some nipples w the drip cups-you just attach horizontally, rather than vertically.

Wouldn't the trough get dirty, too?
