Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yeah but it might keep most of the water out of the litter.

just in thinking about it...I would think those containers might be the ticket for you...a trough I would think would train the birds to prefer it over the nipples. with the containers...they would be right there next to the nipples and would be easier to manage. That's just my quick thinking over it.

I was just thinking about it for the little chickies. The bigger birds yes the cups would be fine.

I see what you are saying now. I have a feeling after thinking about it for most of the night that I'm gonna need a couple of different systems for the different pens here. I'm sure I'll figure it out, just need to process and see lots of examples (hint hint)

Ok I took my 4 bcm chicks out again and really really studied them. I am going to make some better guesses.

Here is BCM#1 I guess pullet

BCM#2 cockerel

BCM#3 cockerel

BCM#4 pullet

I have one more shot of each one on my site. But what do you guys think? Give it another week?
I put flex wrap on their legs and wrote a number on the little tab with a sharpie. Gonna see how that works out.

I think you are right.

Got my first Black Copper Marans and 1 Blue Copper Maran chick 2 days ago. Was so excited. Got my first 2 eggs from them today !! One of the eggs is pretty dark, the other egg isn't as dark and it has dark specks in it. I bought 3 hens that are a year old and they gave me the chick cause one of the hens is it's momma. Hopefully the third hen will lay tomorrow. Is it normal for the egg to be a little speckled?

Ok now that if figured out the eggs did not come from the chicks..... Speckled eggs are normal. The third girl if she is raising babies.... probably no eggs. How old are the chicks?

Hi everyone!
I am so excited..I have French Black Copper Marans hatching in the incubator right now! 3 little peeps already out of the shell knocking all the other eggs askew..so funny to watch.
But I had one BIG surprise... the first peep was not black at all, but pure yellow! How can that be? The breeder of these eggs said it was a closed line of FBCM of the Jeanne and Davis stock. They don't raise any other color of Marans.
Does anyone have a theory or even a guess?

Terri

Could it be a splash? Maybe they raise blue/black/splash not just black?

Wheaten? FBCM sometimes carry recessive wheaten and when breed to another with wheaten you get wheaten. It takes two but it is possible.
