Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I hate to be the one to bear bad news, but this boy is one you won't want to use. At best he has a sprig, at worst carnation comb. Both of these are things you really don't want to breed with. You see the bump on the side of the comb towards the back? That's something you definitely don't want to breed forward. You will probably want to check all of your birds for it and cull accordingly if you are planning on having a breeding program. If you are unsure, post some close up pics of the combs and we'll help ya out

Yes, please post more close up photos of this boys comb.

Just wanted to post a recent Black Copper Marans picture....Darkest we've seen in a very long while. Definitely made me smile. Scuse the grainy picture - cell phone made a better pic with hubby's diggie.....Natural daylight pic.....Will post less grainy one later!

NICE!

I've been lurking here for a while. I bought hatching eggs from a BYCer and have 6 Black Copper Marans chicks. They do have feathered feet. They are 3 weeks old and I can't tell if they are boys or girls.... PinkChick, can you stop by? I'm amazed that you can sex your babies already! And my aren't they cute!! I keep thinking that they are ALL Roos (heaven help me). I haven't been able to upload pictures since they changed the system over. I will give it another try so that maybe one of you can help me out with gender. Thanks!

Thank you and sure I'll be right over! Give me a few days for drive time though and I'm not very good at taking directions so I very well could get lost. LOL!

Photos if you have them of your chooklets would be great and we can help you sex them. I find posting photos directly into the post using the insert photo function from the tool bar is the easiest way to upload photos to the new BYC platform.

Thank you Barb, Vicki and Christie! I love them and lockdown for a few more is tomorrow. 6 of them are the eggs that were suppose to go the DMRippy but I had an accident with the others and these little survivors got popped in the 'bator along with some other eggs that were a tad lighter than I like to set but I figured I would try them out anyway. Will probably sell off the hatchers from the lighter eggs for layers.

Christie~ That blue satin is the Matron of Honor dress that I wore to one of my sisters weddings many years ago.....they can pooh on it all they want. LOL, I always kinda secretly hated that dress because I felt and looked like Violet from Willy Wonka after she ate that gum she wasn't suppose to eat and swelled up like a blueberry. Poop away little chickies, poop away!

Donna~
I like the velcro band system, they look and sound like they work great. Do you ever have problems with the velcro rubbing off and/or breaking any of the shank feathering. I hate that the shank feathering on some of my girls has wore off or is just plain gone because of the bands they have on.

The have had them on for months. I don't think I have looked really. It probably would if the other bands do, but IDK.

Bizarro pullet egg from my blue copper marans today. This is probably egg #9? None of the others were speckled like this. Interesting.
