Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks for that link. It sounds really interesting. I love watching animal documentaries. I never thought I would like turkeys as much as I like my two girls. Even the tom was sweet before something got him. DH had some white turkeys when he was young and they were evil and would chase anyone who went outside. They would lie in wait then attack. So that's kinda what I half expected. Instead we got puppy dogs :D

Hey Debbie! My silkies started laying again today!! I got two eggs so far from 6 hens..but its a start.

I might start collecting eggs for incubation if I can get my win-o-bator done in time. I ordered a pretty blue light-up computer fan for it but HELLO it is HUGE about 3 x the normal computer fan size. I didn't even know they came that big. I guess I shoulda read the fine print LOL!!

nimcomcoop: Pretty egg! How did it taste- or will you be hatching it?

geebs, if you remember in the past discussions we have had I stated I would not ever keep a brown down colored chick as it is carrying the mossy gene. In the study I will keep a few for the study taking picture as they age. When the chicks hatch you will be able to keep track of the chicks by looking at the pictures as they grow.

I am new to chickens BUT I also raise Longhorns. There are longhorns that are born brown and turn darker as they age eventually looking like they have always been black. The are not genetically black animals they are genetically brown even though they do look black. I can easily imagine that it is the same in the chickens and I believe Don is correct in culling them. If for no other reason than to know that when you have a black looking bird it is genetically black.

it is different than pretty much any documentary I've ever watched. I also like watching things on animals. I love learning! Can't help it I suppose.

What are you going to do with the fan? Think it will work for your bator?

I gave the fan to my younger son. He built his own computer a few years ago and it has two fans in it- one for the motherboard and one mounted on the inside of the case. The case-mounted one has been acting up so I told him just to use the new big one. He is gonna have to cut a larger hole in the side of the case and take the old one out but its do-able. We plugged it in and it really pushes some major air..so probably would have been too much for the bator anyways. I will just get another smaller one for the bator- good thing they are cheap!

haha good solution!

Change of story because I just collected after work and there was a solid brown egg laid today so I think this speckled egg is the splash marans pullet's FIRST egg :) I've got 4 marans pullets and until today, only one had been laying.

I just got my marans egg chart. I think the speckles could be a 9. lol
Actually it looks very similar to the #4 egg in my chart, speckles and all.
I would be thrilled if I found that in a nest box!

Edit... ok I am a dork. Did you mean that it is her 9th egg? lol sorry. You know what they say about "a little knowledge".

Haha that's a good name for her. I had to lock up those turkeys. I don't really think turkeys are all that dumb like you always hear. They seem to be able to express empathy and actually seem a little smarter than the chickens about some stuff. It does feel good in a way to have some done. I really need to do about 11 more LOL! I felt kinda bad yesterday, I'm not really a farmer mentality I guess, when it comes to culling chickens..even the roos. I can dress them out but don't wanna kill them. I let dh do that and I won't look either, when he 'does the deed'. I make him cut off the heads and the feet before I 'deal' with them. It would be different if they weren't MY roosters lol. I'm a wuss.

p.s Don't tell dh but I secretly let 2 of the Key West roos out of the 'holding pen' when he wasn't looking HAHA. One was a little crele dude and he gave me the saddest look. He is so pretty. Another was a spangled guy so I let him have a pass too. DH didn't even notice lol.

Sometimes it's best if I don't make any comments about what birds do or don't make it to my chopping block table, I just 'off' the heads and be done with it.
