Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Okie Dokie, I have finally figured out how to post pictures and am posting pics of my 4 week old BCM chicks in the hopes that perhaps you can help me sex, Thank You in advance!

Chick No 1: Pullet

Chick No 2: Roo

Roo - Can you get a better pic of that comb for the comb police
hide.gif
it just looks kinda thick....might want to watch that little guy.

Roo

Pullet

Number 6... Well. this lilttle gal has been peeping non-stop for days. She's obviously sick, but I can't figure out what's wrong with her and would appreciate any advice. She's she's not being picked on, she's got no pasty butt, I've seen her eat and drink and yet is significantly lighter than the other chicks. She keeps her head tucked in and peeps pathetically under the warm light all day.

Pullet, sorry I am no help with the sick thing... might want to post on the Emergency threads.

I think that #2 and #4 are boys.

Just my guesses.......

This forum uploads the picture you right click on so if you click on the thumb nail, that's what will post. Next time, try making sure you right click on the full size image in the album and upload that to the post (which will likely completely cripple your dialup connection - so the thumb nail thing may be a good compromise for you.)

Ok, here are my youngest chicklets, at least some of them! Gees, I swear, trying to get pics of these guys is like trying to photograph leaves in a tornado!

They are either in constant motion, or literally standing on my feet! They are just 16 weeks old today, and seem somewhat smaller than what I am used to looking at, at this age? Vicki girl, these are for you!

This is "Jagger" ~ I'm watching him for a sprig, grrrrr.

This is "Dopey" ~ she is looking good so far!

The boy in the back is "Pekker" ~ his comb is looking ok, but I believe he will carry one gene, so will watch him!

"Pekker" again. I love his dark copper coloring! And, he's on my feet again!

Ok, something is way wrong with these pics! If you click on them they get bigger, and yes, their heads are there! I posted another reply after this one, and it disappeared??? What's going on? Or is it just me?

Just my guesses.......

#2, 3, 4 are males and #5 is quite possibly a male as well, I'm not confident about this one, so I can't commit.

As for the little pullet that is not doing well....try giving her some vitamins and maybe some scrambled egg and yogurt.

Also, what do her droppings look like? IE.... Are they running foamy and yellow, do they show any signs of blood?
They look about 3-4 weeks old is that right?

At the bottom of the thread you will see "Preferences". You can click on that and you will see "Preferred Editor Type". There you have two choices "Rich Text Editor" or "BB Code Editor". The "Rich Text" is the editor that the new platform defaulted to. The "BB Code" is the editor that we used before the change.

If you use Photobucket for pictures, then the "BB Code Editor" allows you to post multiple pictures the way it was done prior to the change. Just throwing that out so you have something else to play with.

Okay, Donna, I get it now. It is easy to use the blue/slpash gene pool to increase the black gene pool. Once a bird is "black" the splash gene is not an issue. Sorry don't know how to genetically write this !!

I'm trying to say , the dilution gene is zero'd out and the black breed true.

Now I see why you are able to use the blues to increase your flocks genetics! I'm still willing to swap some eggs in the spring.

I run my Black Coppers, Blue Coppers and Splash Coppers together (when I have Black Copper hens worthy of running with the rest) anyway, the best Black Copper male I have ever produced (and in hind sight...I SHOULD HAVE NEVER CULLED HIM
he.gif
) was created from a Blue Copper to Blue Copper breeding. The blackest black a person has ever seen on a Marans, nice rich copper (though lacking in wing bow) and a tank. I am a firm believer in creating Black Coppers from the Blues...however there are some folks that would disagree and say not to mix the Black with the Blues and if you do....only breed blues from the blacks for the breeding pen. Not me.....I don't roll this way...there's a reason the 3 colors can run together and live in harmony far be it from me to stand in the way of what nature already had worked out.

DMRippy~ The six eggs that I didn't break and that were suppose to come to you.....have all pipped and one has hatched, a sweet little Blue Copper.
smile.png
Also have some piperage in the other eggs I tossed in.

Soooooooooo OFF TOPIC here for a second........Does anyone here raise meaties? Can you give me any advise on raising them and do I seriously have to do the strict light regime and feed regime? PM answers would be great as to not clutter up the thread and not to mention my living on the edge and going off topic
big_smile.png
....or direct me to a really good source for info on them. Thanks!

Raising Marans to eat is not financially feasible...but they sure do taste great.

PInk, for what it's worth, I raised 8 Broad breasted white turkeys last summer and by the time they were ready for market they didn't move around much. Walk to water and to feed bucket and sit down. Very difficult to keep the breast area clean; lot of broken feathers so protection from soiled litter gone; poo , a lot of poo, a LOT OF POO; they easily soiled their underbelly. I had them free ranging until the last couple weeks as they were too heavy to save themselves from predators, and they really didn't want to walk around any more.

Worth doing! Taste good. I suspect meaties would be similar.
