Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Okay, Donna, I get it now. It is easy to use the blue/slpash gene pool to increase the black gene pool. Once a bird is "black" the splash gene is not an issue. Sorry don't know how to genetically write this !!

I'm trying to say , the dilution gene is zero'd out and the black breed true.

Now I see why you are able to use the blues to increase your flocks genetics! I'm still willing to swap some eggs in the spring.

yeah...the tray I have is the tray that used to come with all the sportsman incubators. My uncle mentioned the bottom tray in the new one was a corrugated material, but I didn't know what it looked like. I would think you have a couple of options. You could just try to build up the dividers higher in the tray itself that the turner trays can't reach, and hope that you can get them high enough to keep the chickers from jumping over. Or if it were me...I'd probably pretty seriously think about cutting down the corrugated plastic to a height where you can add a lid and then put in dividers. That might just be my nature to try and fix things to make them run more efficiently tho. I'm not sure hahaha

Vicki - I don't know why that pic didn't come through....

(I guess you have to copy and paste)

Mine isn't the brand new model, but the insides appear to be the same
My hatching drawer is corrogated plastic and the bottom turning tray dips inside ...

Yours looks like a better idea!!

Hmm - I could always build a different box....
Maybe I'll make something with a solid bottom and the cross stitch media for sides, screen for the top?? that would keep everyone separated...

I thought of using the screen for 2 reasons. My LG has it's heating units at the top and the air needs to move easily and the heating units might be OK with the non-metal screen, not sure it's fire-proof though. ANd I have the screening already. Love the CC mesh though--lived to do CC long ago!

Would definitely do a heating test on the screen first.

Okie Dokie, I have finally figured out how to post pictures and am posting pics of my 4 week old BCM chicks in the hopes that perhaps you can help me sex, Thank You in advance!

Chick No 1:

Chick No 2:

Number 6... Well. this lilttle gal has been peeping non-stop for days. She's obviously sick, but I can't figure out what's wrong with her and would appreciate any advice. She's she's not being picked on, she's got no pasty butt, I've seen her eat and drink and yet is significantly lighter than the other chicks. She keeps her head tucked in and peeps pathetically under the warm light all day.

I think that #2 and #4 are boys.

I agree - thanks Debbi for clearing up any misunderstanding and for your kind note. It was super nice of you and I'd be happy to send you some eggs, free of charge, any time.
Wow, what a generous offer Monique, thank you! I love the color and size on your girls, and would sure love to see it here! My bator will be tied up till mid March, so if your ladies are still laying, may I contact you then?? Glad I came back here to catch up!

Ok, here are my youngest chicklets, at least some of them! Gees, I swear, trying to get pics of these guys is like trying to photograph leaves in a tornado!
gig.gif
They are either in constant motion, or literally standing on my feet! They are just 16 weeks old today, and seem somewhat smaller than what I am used to looking at, at this age? Vicki girl, these are for you!

This is "Jagger" ~ I'm watching him for a sprig, grrrrr.

This is "Dopey" ~ she is looking good so far!

The boy in the back is "Pekker" ~ his comb is looking ok, but I believe he will carry one gene, so will watch him!

"Pekker" again. I love his dark copper coloring! And, he's on my feet again!

Ok, something is way wrong with these pics! If you click on them they get bigger, and yes, their heads are there! I posted another reply after this one, and it disappeared??? What's going on? Or is it just me?

I am evidently still having problems uploding pics here on the new forum!!! The heads in the first 2 pics aren't cut off in my pics on the puter, WTH?? Why are they still so small too??
