Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yeah, I'm planning on a large portion of these eggs to not be good because of the cold and that some of them are a few days older than I would have liked them to be. I tried to trade them out with other eggs I've collected over the last few days, but know I didn't get them all. We'll find out here in a couple weeks for sure I guess when I can tell for sure who is developing well.

Kim, are you feeling ok? Do you need me to call a doctor to make sure you don't have a fever that's making you delirious? Hahaha...Just Kiddin, I get that. I go through that every year....get all excited about hatching and then crap out at some point...not that it ever loses its excitement, but once all the chickies start adding up, that's a lot of work!

LOL! I'm feeling fine...just get tired of hatching sometimes and yes...the numbers seem to stack up and before I know it...I'm taking care of lots of chicks, which is where the work load does tend to add up. If I am not careful...very soon I will have more chicks than adult birds. Fact, I think that the chicks suppose to hatch today will tip the scale.

I hear you on this, we currently have 27 chicks from our NYD hatch and 13 chicks from our 2nd hatch and 36 eggs currently cooking in the incubator due Feb 7th, just heading out to see how we can increase the pen size of the 27 chicks and then move the 13 chicks out to a rabbit hutch size pen-of course they are all out in our heated work garage so we have to share the space with all the equipment

I have some pics of colored Marans. you need any? (Spangled GS, melanized GS, total recessive black female , mismarked BTB males, red-shouldered silver duckwing, proper BTB females, proper Golden Salmon male, red duckwing.
Best,
Karen

I am still trying to figure my way around the new BYC system. Give me a couple of weeks before posting the pics.

Or if you just want me to sned them to you.
Thanks,
Karen

Did you get an answer to the Black coppers coming from blues? I don't remember seeing that.

The copper breed just like Blue Black and Splash

black to black = 100% black
black to blue = 50% each
blue to blue = 50% blue, 25% splash and 25% black
splash to black = 100% blue
splash to blue = 50% each
splash to splash = 100%

I think that is all....

Is this a reasonable method of increasing the gene pool in the FBCM at this point? OR is there enough genetic material to work with currently? I guess I also should ask if the blues came from the black, so it it a moot point??

You can only get blues from a blue. Black will produce only black. Blues don't breed true really. Blacks do. I run my blue roo with my FBCM pullets and that is my start to increase my gene pool. I will then cross those babies with my FBCM roo and those babies back to the blue roo.... I will eventually have enough to chose from I can just have a straight blue pen and and a straight black pen. May have to do that sooner than later on the Black coppers as most people want only the black coppers. I need more black copper pullets, unrelated to my FBCM roo. I have more hatching eggs coming soon that will help that problem, but I will have to wait till they start laying.

you can also produce blue from a black x splash cross- this should produce 100% blue chicks. Crossing blue x blue will produce black chicks, blue chicks and splash chicks. It depends on what you have to work with too.

Okay, Donna, I get it now. It is easy to use the blue/slpash gene pool to increase the black gene pool. Once a bird is "black" the splash gene is not an issue. Sorry don't know how to genetically write this !!

I'm trying to say , the dilution gene is zero'd out and the black breed true.

Now I see why you are able to use the blues to increase your flocks genetics! I'm still willing to swap some eggs in the spring.
