Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok, the gutting part. I don't recall how I did it years ago. I do know that part isn't like rabbits! Cut a hole, reach in and yank??

yeah and rinse out the inside. With extra cockerals that we process we actually take just the breast meat off and maybe the legs if there is enough meat on them- most don't have enough meat else where to make it worth the effort.

Ahhhhh....seed starting here today and the rest of the week, after I finish a couple chicken related things out in the coops. Dad had 2 huge piles (I mean huge PILES) of milled cedar from some old trees that came down on their property about 10 years ago. True 2"x 6" and some 8"x 8" beams....they were all stacked into 2 huge burn piles and he was ready to torch them. I couldn't have that, that wood is still in perfect condition....BURN IT?!?!?!?! DH and I made about 4 trips with the flatbed and brought it all home. There is sooooooo much.....we have enough to frame up 2 10' x 20' structures with extra. I am using some of it to build nice sized raised beds for one of the gardens. Next after the raised beds....I'm going to tear down one of the chicken coops and rebuild it bigger.
Can't wait to see how things go this year in raised beds. Chickens are going to love the garden yummies this year.

Sounds fantastic Kim! I have some raised beds...they are hillbilly ones tho...and I LOVE them. They are old stock tanks that don't hold water anymore. People give them to us when they can't use them any more and each year I add some more. Things grow so amazingly well in them! I can't wait to see pics of the building progress and the gardening! I love, love, love spring!

Dad couldn't believe we wanted that wood.....I thought he was crazy for wanting to burn it. LOL! We hauled it all home last year and we are just now getting around to taking a bit here and there off the piles. I haven't had raised beds before, but understand that the yeild can be doubled for many different varieties of veg. in raised beds..so I'm out to give it a go. I plan on using all of the PVC up in storage that DH thinks he has hidden from me (in hopes that I won't use it...he should have hidden it better...

) anyway, I am going to use it to make frames for all of the raised beds so that I can cover if needed.

you will love raised beds, you can indeed grow so much more and having the advantage of a structure to add a cover to if necessary is awesome. Seasons can get extended and started earlier for sure.
