Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Oh where did the side column with related threads and articles come from?

I have an old square monitor and don't see any thing on the right side. Maybe if I can make some money in chickens I can buy a new monitor? Not , wait, I need a couple new coops first!

Hey Kim....how are you feeling about the predictions on your new babies? Thinkin the ones you stated earlier are still the same, and think you have some more figured out now that its been a couple of days? I'm just fascinated by how fast chicks grow when they are at this age!

When my Wheaten starts to lay again I may hatch a couple of her eggs and see how her offspring do. As far as the BCM, I don't think she will be a good candidate with such small eggs?

Her eggs are likely to hatch. The real question is do you want more birds with the same problem? Maybe just enjoy eating them instead. THey tastes just as good as any other chicken egg. LOL

I am sticking with the guess of 6 female and 6 male. They are doing great and right now are chowing down some breakfast of mashed sweet potato, mushy catfood, cinnamon, a touch of yogurt, a some crushed (pulverized is more like it) cranberries. Yummy and very messy!

haha sounds like they are having a blast! I can't wait to see them as they keep growing!

You are looking at the basil and verde tomatillo seedlings. Just shy of 2 weeks old.

BELOW are the pepper seedlings. They took a little longer to germinate so they are a little smaller. . . .Some were just breaking the ground's surface on the day I took the photos... Two weeks old too.

YOU KNOW it is much more EXCITING to see them in PERSON! LOL

Really--it's a thrill to see a touch of spring. HEre in the Northeast winter is still running strong and as it's only mid-winter . . . . . two more months until it feel like spring . . . . need to get my seedlings going in another 4 weeks. Now is too soon . . . learned that last year !

I missed these this morning! Love it!

I am hoping to get stuff set up for starting seeds today. Its raining and supposed to turn to sleet and snow, but if I can get the greenhouse situated and get my seed starting racks moved inside where its warmer, then I should be on my way to get going.

can't wake my brain up this am.

i am hopeful that I might....only time will tell I suppose. I wouldn't say, but after re reading that article and remembering back on chicks I've hatched out...I think it might be possible. My only question is on the markings on the breast on my boy...kind of like half lacing... I wrote that guy in the UK and am hoping I will hear back!

I was thinking the same thing about the lacing vs barring. I don't know if theirs are quite barred either. I was thinking your boy may be silver cuckoo x birchen. If he is that is where I would start looking for a female...in your birchen flock! Maybe you still have one of those girls around?

You sure have a lot of seedling growing. They look real healthy. Peppers always seem to take longer to germinate than tomatoes. Do you ever get the free tomato seed from wintersown.org? I order from them every year it is free for 6 pkts of tomato seed. You only have to send a self addressed stamped envelope with 2 stamps (.88 cents postage) and you must follow the instructions on their website and print out the order form they provide to send with your order. They are a good organization trying to save seeds from open pollinated varieties. Here is the website. They run out quickly this time of year. http://www.wintersown.org/wseo1/YourChoiceTomatoSASE.html

Are you keeping your pots outside? I have mine under lights right now. Anywhere I put them outside except the screen porch which is really shady...the chickens or the squirrels get to them when they are really small. One year I had the little greenhouse thingy full of 72 little seedings sitting outside and the squirrels came and dug out every one of them grrrrrr.
GReat to know! Love tomatos!!!

Turned my green house into a turkey house!!! Or rather DH did for me. Not sure what I will use this year. Maybe a temp type made with bales of straw and glass roof. More to build. . . . DH loves building
