Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

yay! I have been thinking about it today and think that I probably will end up with about 30 eggs or less going into lockdown. We'll see. I also wanted to ask if anyone has ever had the aircell develop in the small end of the egg? In all my years hatching, I've never run across it, but I have two in this batch...it looks so weird. I was candling last night and had two eggs that were really dark, so I put the light on the narrow end there is a totally developed air cell and could see that the eggs are developing right along.

I had one do that last hatch of Marans and I just thought I had it upside down.... hard to tell sometimes.

Ok, just wanted to share the BEAUTIFUL pullets/hens I got. Blue Cuckoos Someone give me ideas for breeding so I don't have to get another roo or pen... Olive Eggers is all we could come up with in order for me to take them home.

They are TOO pretty

I am going to have to get a cuckoo roo aren't I

Hey Raven1, I'm guessing Donna got these from you? How many generations cross are these? I'm moving into my second year with them and was just wondering for color comparison on the cuckoo pattern showing.

These are 1st gen. Daddy is a Splash Cuckoo and Moms were solid Blacks. I thought my roo was just a splash but as he got older he started to show more and more barring in his hackles and saddle and these hens are the result.

Might take you up on that offer.... let me think about it. Hubby just LOVES them.

Cad~ Congrats on the new kids!!!!!

Donna~ Love the new Cuckoos! Looks like you need a roo!!!

Vicki~ Hope you are feeling better. Thank you and Debbi for the comments on the male chick.

Candled this morning it is day 8 and removed 4 clears and 1 quitter.....but like Cadeau, it had been cold for a couple days and nights here so I am sure it effected some of the eggs.

Have collected some more along with some Barnevelder eggs. FINALLY some Barnie eggs!!!!!

Also going to separate the BLRW's with the new roo since he is finally out of quarantine and hatch me some BLR babies!!!!!

I have sooooo much space to work with now since downsizing and getting rid of 6 more makes it even better. Wish it didn't take me down to just 8 Marans though...3 of which are in the laying flock, but I did keep 3 of the last hatch, 1 black, 1 blue and 1 splash.
