Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Two more!!

7 Marans and 2 cochins

3 more Marans pips that I can see!!

Vicki - the one blue that I'm sure of is a light, silvery blue, too!
The rest will have to wait until I open the bator!

The powdery blues are SO pretty with the darker head and darker lacing!!

man! The're popin like popcorn over there! I still just have only the one and no signs other eggs are doin much yet. I am hoping overnight they will get cracking! I don't think there could have been a better first chick tho!..they're wild! Like a cheerleader of sorts for the others!

Hmm - I wonder how Kim's hatch is going?
I think she's running a couple hours behind me, so maybe she's doing chores??
(or maybe she can't stand to leave her bator window!!)

LOL - I do think the first chick out encourages the others to pop out!

I seem to always have one that pops out a full day earlier than all the others and hollers like all get out!! This is only one of a few hatches that I've NOT had a early baby!

C'mon babies HATCH!!

I'm hoping a few more cochins hatch - only 2 will be lonely...

I hope you have lots of good news in the morning!!
(I hope I do, too - I have an appt to get my taxes done!

OH!! good luck on the taxes! I get mine done Tuesday before work! I'm really hoping for good news too!

yeah...I wonder how Kim's hatching is going... Maybe she'll come back on here before too long!

I sure hope I have lots more chicks in the morning! I'm so excited to meet them!

I had someone knowledgeable tell me that 7 weeks might be too early to judge. (Mine was 5 weeks old at the time. He suggested I let the bird grow out and referred me to this picture - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/218470/what-are-the-dqs-in-silkies/10#post_2588032 - scroll up to the black chick) Plus, if I was understanding correctly with vulture hocks, the feathers have to be stiff, not just abundant. My bird in question, a Cuckoo Marans, has improved with age. He is now 13 weeks old.

Christie Rhae, this sounds hopeful ! Sorry you're having to sort out this difficulty with one of your hard gotten chicks.

In that case you better bring more than 1 bottle of wine!!!

Stromboli is anything you can imagine stuffed inside of a thin pizza type bread type dough and rolled up and baked at 500* for approx. 18-20 minutes. I like to pressure cook the Marans meat so that it is nice and tender and shredded for the inards of the boli......add anything else in the world that you want and get ready for bliss. Warning, I need heavy equipment to move me from the table to the couch after eating....but sooooooooo worth it!

On another note.....has anyone heard from Donna about the rest of her hatch?

I can't read 56 post!!!! I am here at Newnan so really can't catch up till I get back. I ended up with 3 live babies, one from the blues hatched and died (was a splash with nice feathered legs too

he tried so hard, lived for 2-3 days.) So final count is One splash, One blue and One black

Thank you! I would be more discouraged but I know that Stephanie from Chester Ridge Farms is incubating 15 chicks for me as we speak! Finally someone who can send day old marans to Hawaii! woohoo!
I spent a half hour sitting out watching my 6 little marans chicks this afternoon. The chick I posted a pic of is the worst. The others are definitely fluffy bottoms but more like fluff than feathers. I will keep watching them as they grow and will not breed any with problems like that. I am in no rush and am enjoying the journey. I can say that now that I actually have some chicks! It was getting depressing when I could not get any to hatch. Empty nest syndrome.. lol.

Go Babies GO!!!!!!

Mine are supposed to go into lockdown tomorrow, but I am thinking it will be Sunday before I can. We will see....

Kim, BTW I left the other eggs in the hatcher till I get back so MAYBE ... but doubtful.
