Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Starting my first hatch of Maran eggs in a couple weeks. Any help would be appreciated. As these are crazy expensive I would like the best success I can have. I will be putting in the bator: 6 Black Copper, 6 Golden Cuckoos, 3 Polish and probably between 3-6 of a Ameraucana/Barred Rock cross.

Well...the morning update on the hatch! They are now half way thru day 21, and 20 out of 40 chicks are hatched. Several more are in various stages of pipping and zipping! I can't wait to see how many more hatch. Oh..and the cuckoo egg with an amazing amount of bloom just started the process of hatching!

Oh...and Marcia! Just from what I can see its looking like there are a couple of Marans/Wyandotte crosses, which I knew might be possible due to a pen jumping crazy boy. So, I'll be sure to post some pics of them esp for you since we've talked about the cross.

OH! And I see I owe you an email. I've been a wee bit distracted with work and this hatch! And my favorite...a massive headache that won't go away.

Woo-Hoo!! Keep 'em coming!

As for the headache, I just heard yesterday the Ginger is supposed to be helpful for migranes. I don't get migranes, instead, I inherited Cluster headaches from my Dad, a type of headache usually only men get...lucky me. I found an energy drink that stops them in their tracks! I mean, this is like a miracle for me!! I keep a bottle on hand at all times now!

I might have to try ginger....I get them from changes in barometric pressure, so I'm not sure if that would help, but I'm willing to try. Its been on and off for two weeks, but starting to really wear me out!

I am really pleased with this hatch so far. I have some that are just monsters! I thought there was about four chicks all huddled up together this am in one of the dividers, but when I shined the flashlight on them to see, the stood up an it was only two!

Best part of all of this is that I have lots of blues!!!

When I was hospitalized years ago and having migraines, the nursing staff provided fresh cups of caffeinated coffee. It worked very well. I will have to try the ginger root too, ginger has several good health properties related to the circulatory system as I remember.

So...what's the vote on how long I should leave the chicks that have already hatched in the hatcher? They are starting to run around like crazy and knocking the eggs that are still not hatched into one another and etc....so just wondering what others do. I've never had a set system...

haha I got the coffee covered for sure! That's one of my favorite things. In fact, this is what I'm doing right now

I usually don't watch the weather too close because I can usually feel when storm fronts are coming and going...I still haven't found something that works for me right away. So, maybe the ginger will do the trick!?

I don't have a set system either, but when they get rowdy and knocking the other eggs around, if no one, or at least some aren't zipped 3/4 of the way, I yank the chicks out quickly. I think I have more losses here from the soccer players than I do, due to a humidity drop. My bator gets the humidity and temp back pretty quickly.
