Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Today is hatch day for mine too! I will update tonight.

I set 115 eggs yesterday (some were old so prob. will not hatch) I handful of my Marans the darkest eggs only (they were old) about 1/2 the Cuckoo eggs, all the eggs from the new Blue and Black Coppers pullets, RIR, Lav Split Ams, D'uccle, Olive Eggers and 18 for someone else. I will set another 7 doz in three days.

Are black coppers the only Marans where slate legs are acceptable, or is it ok in blue marans, too?

Hi Mama!
Blue, Blue Copper, Splash and Splash Copper can also have slate legs but their slate legs is more of blue slate that matches their blue plumage unlike the grayish darker slate of the Black or Black Copper Marans. A Splash bird can have the whiteish pinkish legs too and not just the blue slate. Hope that made sense.

I tried incubating 7 Emu eggs for my neighbor a couple years ago.....I wanted them sooooooo bad. The eggs are gorgeous and the chicks can be sexed at hatch too! The eggs didn't hatch as her female was ill and it passed to the eggs, so until my neighbor gets another female I will just have to suffer along. 2 years before the females lay their first eggs and the best part about Emu besides their eggs....the male sits on the eggs and hatches them out and he raises them.
The female will kill the young and has to be removed from the pen once the chicks hatch and cannot be returned until the chicks are gone.


I've got 3 little chickies out and about 5 more pips. No action thus far in the other 3 eggs. They sure are taking their sweet time this go around.

I'm trying not to get too excited, but there might be a possibility coming up I'm just about bursting at the seams about! Also, wish me luck, goin to do taxes here in a bit....I'm prayin for good news!

Math ~ I can't believe you walked away from the Emu?? Are you sure you didn't put him in a backpack and carry him home?? How cute he is, but unfortunatly, they grow up! I sure wouldn't want to have a nasty one of them! I have a hard enough time dodging Pip!

They are doing great! Now that I have the bator up and running, maybe I will have time to get some pics this week. The one with stubby feathers, is still a little bare backed

but he is fine. I put my 4 new German NH (about 2 weeks old) in with them and they are getting along great!

I am leavin in a few minutes for the taxes and go straight to work...sometimes on tuesdays I get off early, but if not, it will be after 7 my time when I get home. So, I'll try to get some stuff written up to you...there's tons of stuff I'm sorting through and am actually really truly excited about the possibilities!

haha....I'll PM you too Debbi! Don't you worry. Its scary, but excited...kind of an all or nothing situation.

This little EMU is only about 2 weeks old.... TOO CUTE!

that is so cute!! Someone on the WI thread was thinking about trying to incubate eggs and was asking if anyone would be interested in providing homes!! My DD(12 years) thought it would be neat but we don't have enough land and live to close to the road.... thanks for sharing I will have to show the kids this picture!
