Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I can send you more eggs but it will be a while before I can.....I have many chick orders to fill. For some reason nobody else in the state of WA wants to let go of any of their Marans or folks tell me the other are flaking out. I have been swamped with calls and requests.

anytime!

The little baby silkie just died

He had developed a tiny bit of a rattle in his chest that just kept getting worse this afternoon. Sadly, I guess the momma broody knew what she was doing when she abandoned it. Darn he was so cute!

Vicki, How many babies did you end up with? and did you not watch the humidity at all? I usually try to keep it at about 30-35%. What was your running? Mine will drop down till it will not register on the gauge if I don't add some water. The new bator is running about 30% with no water, probably because the wood is still wet.

I had six out by the time I left the farm

for a few more in the morning. I set 15 RIR and 2 SLW in lockdown too. I got 1 lav split, 3 EE and 2 leghorn/AM crosses.

I ended up with 33 out of 40 and that's with a poweroutage. I left the 7 eggs in and will take them out tomorrow night when I get home from work if nothing happens. I figured I'd give them 3 days to see how they do.

I did watch the humidity, very closely. I kept the humidity between 25 to 30% the first 18 days and ran at 60% for lockdown. They did fantastic that way. I use an gravity feed water bucket and during the first 18 days I will let the water in and then use the plastic pinchy thing on it to stop it from flowing because otherwise it gets too high, but for lockdown I put a sponge in the tray and let the water flow as needed and it holds steady.

Yipee on the chickers at your place! Hopefully you will have more greet you in the A.M.
