Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks Debbi! The 3 chicks I hatched were some of her first eggs and were slightly lighter than these. This is the color she has been giving me for the last 2 weeks...of course 4 had holes in them because she is a scratcher and scratches all of the shavings out of the way and exposes the wood floor of the nest box and poof the egg hits the wood. The dog enjoyed those and didn't care 1 lick what color they were, I was tore up...I wanted to incubate them so bad.

Had a scare with my Bill Sr the other day.......found him around noon covered by snow and frozen with a slightly bloody comb by a hole in the fence into the pasture where obviously something quite large got in.
He had to have been there all night and it was cold 27 degrees overnight and had been snowing off and on. He was just laying there staring and not blinking, not moving. I thought the worst and bent to pick him up and he blinked, that scared the you know what out of me and I jumped, LOL! I picked him up, his feet and legs were white, frozen up to his thighs. As soon as he realized he was almost off the ground he freaked out (which this bird never does..I assume he was still freaked out by whatever had taken place during the night) so I put him down and I could see he was trying to orient himself with where he was and appeared somewhat lost, but was able to move about and was walking fine, I took off walking, he followed and we headed back to the coop about 150' away. Along the back we followed a trail of white feathers from one of my Delaware hens (#36 my favorite) to the coop door which was tore up. Bill freaked out again once we got to the door of the coop.
I put him back in and surveyed the damage and took a head count.......birds missing at this point are 2 Blue Copper hens, 1 Welsummer hen and 1 Delaware. 4 birds in one night...whatever it was hungary and made more than one trip. I found another trail of Blue Copper Marans approx. 30' further away from the first trail, but still headed back to the hole in the fence where I found Bill.
I fixed the door, fixed the fence and made the entire perimeter of the fence hot, nothing has been back and Bill was doing great by that very afternoon.

That's terrible Kim...I'm so sorry that you lost some girls. Sure glad that Bill Sr made it through that. How is he doing now? Still ok? You're gonna have to do some mighty hatching to get yourself a nice pen of Marans going again!

nothing stupid about yo stoopid i use a ax or the 12 guage shotgun. i only head shoot them. . im located in a area that shooting is no problem u ladies are tough cookies and tip my hat to u girls. i had my mind set to cull around 6. had a rooster in one hand and a ax in the outher but sis stoped me and said wait a few more weeks. i kept telling the roo it was going to be ok. i guess im kind of kosher... they are sweet birds but we have to many

are flocks Are very disease resistant.and the chicks we add are the strongest from each generation we only turn our hatching eggs in the incubators twice a day, this eliminates any weak genetics's being passed on.

I don't know when I will stop wondering WTH these folks on EBAY are smoking when they write their posts....

Do they consider having their ads proofed for spelling before posting?

For instance, Are versus OUR.

The really big question I have is how does "only turn our hatching eggs in the incubators twice a day" eliminate weak genetics ? ? ?

Ok, just have to make my presence know

Well....still can't seem to be able to load any photos on here. Its so strange after having no problems at all. Whenever I try, it just sits there, thinking about it....for a long time...then I give up and cancel it.

Oh, that is too funny! I was just about to PM you and ask you WTH???? Then I got into the purple print!

Spelling in this country has gotten terrible! I am so much a slacker in my later years, but some people; no, make that a LOT of people, must have slept through their English classes all the way through school!! My pet peeves are the "to, too, and two!" Then there are the "there, they're, and their".
barnie.gif
Some of them get much worse from there! Then there are the ones that use absolutely no puncuation!!!

I know my English teachers are probably spinning in their graves at some of my spelling and puncuation lately, but at least I TRY to speak/write in English!

I've found as I've gotten older, I've probably forgotten more than I ever learned!

Math ~ I can't believe you walked away from the Emu?? Are you sure you didn't put him in a backpack and carry him home?? How cute he is, but unfortunatly, they grow up! I sure wouldn't want to have a nasty one of them! I have a hard enough time dodging Pip!

I spent the entire 2011 building chicken coops and pens. I just am not up to taking on EMUs too! DANG it was so cute. There were folks selling EMU EGGS too. MAN

THOSE ARE SOME BIG EGGS! I don't think I want a bird in the yard that is taller than me! LOL.... As it is now they all STALK me. I have a roo that goes CRAZY the minute he hears my voice. I am the CRACK lady and they know it!

PINK, I didn't know ANY of that information you shared. I did ask the owner of the emu how long before they could be sexed and she said a year. THAT really SCARED me off....
I would LOVE to hear what a male EMU sounds like....

Vicki ~ Are the weather forecasters up there calling for more storms tonight?? They are calling for rain and hail here, although every time we have hail here, there is always a tornado watch or warning that comes with it. Be safe!
