Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Sounds like you picked up some good finds :) Maybe try treating them with small pieces of bread, we do this with our chicks starting around 4-5 weeks- it helps get them through the wild phase LOL!
yeah, I've been working with them all afternoon and they are already so much better....they seem to love it when i talk to them and chatter back at me just like good little Marans should

Thank you for your purple egg post.

I recently discovered that I have a hen laying a dark egg that is covered by a pale lavender mist. I am sure I tossed most of her eggs because the mist lightened the egg and I only hatch the darkest eggs I can find that day in my pens. But, that day I was outside and the sun was actually shinning and hit the eggs just right and to my surprise I realized the egg was not light, it was covered in a pale lavender misting. In nearly fell over at the oddity. I even wondered what I might be doing wrong in my line breeding and if my line had gotten polluted some how, needless to say I was a bit upset but after I calmed down my curiosity took hold.

I decided to hatch the eggs.

What a wonderful surprise to see that someone else has had this too and that my line is not polluted.....

Thank you,

Still just lurking. I'd love to share pics of my BC Marans chicks but I've lost my ability to post pictures. I've got my IT guy working hard to remedy the situation AKA ~ DH.;)

haha...I have your twin egg at my place! I believe they are calcium deposits indeed.

Anyone that has dealt with squash bugs will get why it freaked me out when I collected mine a couple of days ago. The bumps and color remind me so much of squash bug eggs on the underside of squash plant leaves. There isn't too much I hate more than squash bugs. (we need a smilie that's freaking out haha)

THanks for your input. I think it is calcium too, perfect beads laid down before the paint is applied. Fortunately it not bug eggs considering the location of application !

Any thoughts on why and will it settle out and stop appearing??

ANd how the heck do I capture the origianal post and the comment together?????

I was finally able to get a good photo showing the real color of those lavender looking eggs I get from the Marans from time to time. Tried to hatch a couple of them out with the fridge babies but they didn't hatch. They are the some of the hardest eggs to hatch with this extra thick coating on them. Have only ever been able to hatch one out and that was a couple years ago.

My turn, Sweeeet..............

haha...yeah. I am really glad they are not bug eggs! blech.... I have only ever gotten just that one from a couple of days ago. I would guess it was just some sort of glitch in the works. I'll be watching for more, but so far nada.

I don't know how to connect the original post and the comment together....that's one thing I liked as an option on the old format.

OH MY GAWD! DH just managed to wipe out every single picture on my computer. EVERY ONE. All in the attempt to post on the new BYC. He assures me that they're 'somewhere'. But they Most certainly are not on my computer anymore. No calendar information, no apps, and none of the pictures of my children. Crud.

Check the recyle/trash bin/folder - everything is usually there until permanently deleted. Good luck.
