Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm not as brave as you, Christie!
I pay a little old lady $1.50/bird and SHE does all that yucky stuff for us!

Totally worth the buck 50!!

Have you ever tried SketchUP? It is a free autoCAD program and you can design it in 3D and it will give you all the measurements based on what you designed. If you can stick with measurements that are the most efficient with the lumber you are ahead of the game. The pallets I used were hard to come by. I had never seen pallets like them before. I don't think I can even get them anymore. The few last times I drove by they didn't have any....

Hi guys i ordered a mixture of marans eggs, there all 9 weeks old now but theres 1 that i dont know what type of marans it is. I have BCM, Wheaton and a cuckoo Marans. But i dont know what she is, we call her Buck Beak of Harry Potter. She has beutifull Amber Eyes and lovely feathered legs.

Anyone have a good plan/pics for a row house of coops with yards?? (must be for cold weather)

I'm hoping to do a row house (or double row), rather than have my "shanty town" of single coops and yards.

I think I know what I want but I need plans or pics to explain to SO...

Here is a picture of mine, each has a coop and then a run of at least 14' x 4-5' and they house 2 to 3 hens and one roo. I can take pictures of the plans we drew up for these when I get home tonight. They have all the measurements. They are built from old stockaid fencing and old sheet metal attached to it on the backside and burried 2' in the ground to discourage things from digging in. Some of the doors hubby built from the fence panels and some were recycled storm doors that a neighbor was throwing out because the glass was gone out of them. You have to overlook the junk in the picture the sink is still waiting to be installed we have a water hydrent right there and hubby is installing the sink so I can wash feeders and such right there so they don't ever have to be taken in the house to be washed. And the cat she dreams of catching one of those darn guinea birds but that is all she is going to do is dream, lol.

Hi

I lurk here, I like the Marans and a very important Lady also likes them so I expect that there are going to be some joining the Icelandics.

Pens are always challenging, getting enough space for breeding groups, I am planning on making some larger Nella Brooders, 8' long, and even 10' long, 2' W and either 2' or 4' high depending on size of the adults. The 2' high ones can be double tiered, and will work great for chicks or small birds. The 8 & 10' long ones will work well for a rooster and small breeding group of hens. They will also work for growing out groups of roosters to select from.

I enjoy the thread, and the pics of the Marans, they are a new breed to me and I get a lot out of the thread.

Jake

Hi Tracy,

Just a guess on my part, but she looks like a Cuckoo X Wheaten mix to me. I'm sure someone else will chime in soon.

Wow, that bird ALMOST looked penciled! Interesting to be sure!

WELCOME, Jake Levi - the Marans are as fun as they are frustrating to work with - I sure enjoy them, and hope you do, as well!

Good morning everyone, I'm trying to catch-up, but I'm only on 3249. I thought I would ask here, I hatched out Marans from Nancy about 3 weeks ago. One had an odd appearance to its face (cute though) I thought after a nothing of it then last night I was moving them to a bigger brooder and noticed it again, It is totally blind, I waved my hand in front of it nothing, has anyone had a blind chicken before. (BF was worried when I told him, he don't like culling the little one's)
Thanks Michele

She will learn to compensate. If she is not having problems I would not worry about it. I would not breed her.

cadeau - on your row pens, I strongly encourage you to contact member culler - he has some VERY nice ones and I know he's posted pics of them here on BYC, I THINK in the Wheaten Marans thread, but I could be wrong.

Michele, I had a blind chicken once - she was fine, so long as I didn't make big changes in the locations of the feeder & waterer. HOWEVER, she DID get picked on.
