Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Here is the blind baby
LL

and some of her hatch mates
LL

I had a great hatch 6 FBCM it looks like, 5 girls (one is iffie) and one boy. I have had great hatches with more pullets the cockerels lately, but the yard is still overrun with D'Uccle roosters.

With my luck she will probably turn out to be the nicest out of all the girls

But I think I'm going to keep her maybe she will go broodie and I can have her raise up some chicks.

Hello!
I really REALLY want some amazing, beautiful Marans chickens. I do not want hatchery chickens, but really top quality, beautiful, amazing birds that can produce beautiful eggs. I adore the egg color, but I actually love the Marans chickens for their amazing looks. I really REALLY love the Wheaten Rooster and hens!
Can anyone direct me to a good, reputable breeder who sells fertilized eggs and/or chicks? I'd like to hatch eggs so my children can witness this little miracle, but I'll take chicks if that is the best quality I can get (or close to).
I'm sure you guys can tell me about several good breeders! I'm a total newbie at all of this, but I take the quality of my other pets seriously and I happen to be a breeder of therapy cockapoos (or spoodle) dogs and sugar gliders... so I'm picky. You know, breeder picky! :D

Thanks in advance for any help!!! I've seen some amazing websites out there... but it is always so scary to pick someone based on the websites and I've never been to a chicken show... or, I'm not sure how chickens are judged! LOL
These wouldn't be show chickens anyway, but pet birds... just wanting to do my part in supporting good breeding practices!

Thanks Wynette,

I agree on the pic of the pullet, to me looks very much a Cuckoo/Wheaten cross, I think she could prodeuce either depending on how she is bred, I do like the leg feathering, I am trying to add that to my Icelandics, it happens in them but is not common, with Crests I think it cant help but help wintr hardiness.

I had an older Wyandotte hen that went blind, got spurred in both eyes, she stayed with the flock and followed them around, she learned voices and would come to us. She lived on several more years, til 10-12 at least.

@Pinkchick, New to the site here.. just saw these beautiful speckled lavender eggs and you say they come from your Marans? It that the result of crossing them with some other breed? I have two FBCM pullets, so I haven't seen their egg color just yet but I was under the impression they only laid dark brown eggs. Please school me on the ways of lavender eggs! Thanks!

Hi guys i ordered a mixture of marans eggs, there all 9 weeks old now but theres 1 that i dont know what type of marans it is. I have BCM, Wheaton and a cuckoo Marans. But i dont know what she is, we call her Buck Beak of Harry Potter. She has beutifull Amber Eyes and lovely feathered legs.

She is beautiful! Her silver and black patterned hackle colors remind me very much of a Silver Salmon Marans though she has a very light body color. I love her!
I'm not a genetics guru and I hope someone comes by and helps me out here if I am wrong in my thinking...but I am positive I read somewhere and perhaps it has been discussed here in this enormous thread, but I think that cuckoo's and wheatens are used in the making of Silver Salmons Marans.

Hi! Welcome to BYC and the Marans thread!

Thanks for kind words on the laverderish looking eggs. They are just Marans eggs from regular Marans that give them an extra heavy and thick colored bloom or cuticle. When they are wet they are Marans egg brown. Not every bird lays an egg like this, some may never, but the bird that does may not even lay that many of them.
I had one girl that gave me eggs this color everytime she laid and egg but since her I have not had one who gave them to me on regular basis.
