Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

There can be some variation of coloring in the black copper babies. Some have more black than others. Its not unusual to have some off white coloring on the chests and faces and wingtips on bcm babies. I had one that was almost all black on her face when she was a baby. If the breeder has black copper and blue copper Marans you could get either Black copper or Blue copper babies or even splash babies if two of her blues mated. Some of the darker blues can look black especially when they are younger. If you post your pics I am sure someone can help you out.

Ok thanks. She said her blues and blacks were seperated for about a week before I purchased eggs from her. So I'm not sure what I'll end up with. Truth be told doesnt really matter at this point. I'm happy with any of them. My last attempt to hatch shipped Maran eggs did not turn out so well. I got 0 out of 12 last time. I had bator issues though. I did get 10 out 15 this time. Thanks for the info and I will post some pics later. Oh one other thing. Is their a way to sex BCM chicks at this age? Other than the vent checking thingy......

Oh wow great pics thanks for posting. Most of mine do look like this. But a few do not. I'm away from my camera rightnow. But i'll post some example pics later today.

Oh Vicki, evidently, I got all of your rain! It POURED here yesterday, and is cloudy and cool here today. Yup, I heard we are supposed to have frost next week too, getting into the 40s tonight. It's only 55* here now.

Miss Olivia is still on her nest this morning. She has this "trance" look on her face, is that a broody thing? I thought opening the door to the crate would upset her, but she just sat there. She's eating and drinking, so all is well. I might have chickens coming out of my ears in the next few weeks!

Nothing like you big girls, with your big bators; but I can get in trouble on my own small scale.

Who needs a big bator when you have a bunch of big fat broodies haha! That being said, I am still working on my winobator. Maybe I will get some more time to work on it this weekend. It seems like something always comes up when I am trying to do things that I want to do. That's the joys of parenthood I guess lol.

Hey Lynette, you being the plant guru here, I've a question. Can you graft an apple tree sprig onto a Walnut tree?? Would it produce fruit? Oh the things I can think up over a glass of wine! I could call it the "Waldorf Salad Tree"

I have no clue about apples to walnuts.

The only trees I have grafted are citrus. I am going to try and graft some tropical trees this year once I get my root stocks large enough. Usually people graft citrus to citrus, mangos to mangos, cacao to cacao, etc. I think some stone fruits might be able to be grafted together but don't quote me on that lol.
I don't know about nuts to fruit but you could always try. I did try some crazy grafting experiments with grafting green brugmansia seedlings to albino seedling doing a side graft once, haha, to see if the albinos could live off the green ones.

I did a lot of grafting with the Conservation Dept. State Forest Nursery when I worked there years ago. It was a lot of fun. We grafted some Butternuts to Walnuts, something the college educated uniformed personel said would not work. Well, surprise! It did work and there are now a whole grove of them south of here. Wish I could remember where that was, I would love to see them now! No wine this morning!

I was looking at the neat little walnut in the back yard, and when I went to the front yard, was looking at my apple tree thinking it really needed some pruning. I hate to toss the sprigs, maybe I can just root them and grow more apple trees.

So that's where all the rain went!

Its looking like maybe sat we'll get a bit, but for now I'll be watering. The plants all seem to be doing good...just came in from planting brussel sprouts, white and purple kohlrabi and transplanted my leeks. I'll run in and pick up a couple of things I need to do some more planting...like innoculant granules for planting peas and a couple of herbs I can't grow very well....then I should be well on my way!

The trance thing sounds like a pretty normal broody thing...just don't stick your hand in there! haha...they come out of that trance quick when that happens! Not all get scrappy, but some do.

I'm trying to plan for all the chicks I'm gonna have coming soon....should be interesting.

The guy was a little more peppy when I went out there a while ago. He felt good enough to run from when I went to pick him up, but had no interest in my offering of egg. I went ahead and used the Ivomec and since it was that pens day to free range I left the door open and he followed the pullets out. I'm holding off the Nuflor right now and will dose him again tomorrow. Comb and wattles still cold tho, but they have a better color.

That is good to hear, slick! I hope he continues to improve. Haha I just noticed your signature line. Funny

Hey Vicki, what ever happened with those pretty really light Silver Cuckoos you had that you were trying to find more information about (the proper name escapes me). Are you going to set some of their eggs as well this spring?
