That is good to hear, slick! I hope he continues to improve. Haha I just noticed your signature line. Funny

Hey Vicki, what ever happened with those pretty really light Silver Cuckoos you had that you were trying to find more information about (the proper name escapes me). Are you going to set some of their eggs as well this spring?

you mean the silver marans? I'm working on some stuff with them. Test mating right now. I have one egg in the incubator, I had forgotten about it til you said something. Its out of Regulator my silver boy and one of the light colored girls I've shown before. So, we'll see. I plan to do some more work with them, but am still arranging pens just the way I want for breeding and also just did the first round of worming, so I'll do some more setting after I get past all that.

I've been talking with the guy from England as well and getting info gathered and etc. I'll update when I'm at a place where I can get a bigger picture of what all might be involved with them. I also have some ideas I'm brewing up, so we'll see. I blame all this on my dad's never ending "Projects" when I was growing up! haha

Wanted to share a picture of a few of our French Black Copper Marans chicks from our April Fools Day Hatch :)

They look just like mine....

Are they siblings or cousins? They're so much fun and such little sweetie pies!

I bet they do Lisa! They are siblings... I agree, they are such little sweetie pies... just like their parents! This flock is so much fun... they come running from across the pasture when they see me - I just love that! For me, it is so enjoyable to keep chickens that really seem to love being here... not a flighty skittish bone in their come to mama waddle!

Yes that's the ones lol. I couldn't remember the name.

A few pics of my new babies. I'm new to marans.... is it possible to sex black copper's at this age? Also are the lighter ones in the third pic blues? The breeder I bought them from had blacks and blues.

I have two BCM boys that are three months old. I am wondering if there is anything I can cull for now?

Here is BCM#1
His comb has wider points and I think there are 5. He has one little down feather on the middle toe. His breast has a few speckles of copper.

Here is BCM#2
The points on his comb are different...skinny points and I think more than 5. He also has one down feather on his middle toe but his breast is cleaner.

I don't know enough yet what else to look for. The standard says that there is not supposed to be yellow in the hackles but I always see yellow in the hackles of pics of BCM so maybe I am not understanding what that means. The pic of #2 was closer to the flash so his hackles do look more yellow. They are the same as #1 in real life.

Can I cull one of them now for anything obvious or should I wait? I also have a batch of 5 week old BCM cockerels so these are not all I will have to work with in the future.

Any ideas? Thank you!

3 months might be a little soon unless there are obvious faults, like carnation comb, wrong leg color, feathers on any other toes then the outer one-from what I'v read sounds like using one with feathers on other toes can cause issue down the road in future generations. Does the cockeral in picture 1 hold his tail downward like that all the time? Or is he not liking the photo shoot? :) Hopefully others with more inside will give you feedback too! You could always see what another month or 2 shows and then cull at that point.
