Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

This is a much slower process than I thought. Had two around 10 am yesterday. Had a number of pips during the day, but nothing out of the shell as of 10 last night. Went out at 5 this morning and 3 more were out with one about to blow the lid. So far there's 3 OE's and 2 Marans. The one about to hatch is also a Marans. That leaves 21 more eggs to go. We all know how my Saturday will be spent. :D

Good Luck with the rest of your hatch!

Just a quick question for those that are in the midwest. I was wondering what the interest might be for the possibility of a Marans meet in Lincoln, NE? We're working on developing the show for Nov and selecting meets and etc for it, so thought I would ask to see if it would be worth it to pursue it. I know for sure I will be there, since I'm doing all the paperwork for it

So I was on MPC looking how much some BCM day old chicks will cost me in the future. I'm getting a comp from eggs that didn't hatch. Anyway as I am selecting these (which are 8.00 per chick) it has options for sexing. Hens are 2.00 more. Strait run is 8.00 and males are 1.50 less. I was under the impression that you could sex BCM accurately except waiting it out?

Do you mean you are wondering how they can accurately sell straight run, select males and females? If so, they do vent sexing at most hatcheries and the like to ship out the proper order.

Flgarden~Thanks.
I have set the really round eggs and they hatch out just fine. Figuring out the end that goes up is the fun part. I candle before putting them in if they are really round and try looking for the air cell...if I can't see it, I put them in the 'bator and candle them in a few days, the air cell should show after a few days of cooking. If I have them upside down, I flip them and forget them. :)

Anyone heard from Debbi about those Wheatie eggs?????? And I read that someone else was hatching out some eggs from Ms. Wynette right now...wonder how those are going?
