Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi Everyone!

Congrats on all the good news about the eggies in the bators and hatchers! Sounds great!

Hope everyone is doing okay and to those that are not feeling well I am sending get better very soon vibes to you all.

Little bad news here.....my dog killed my one and only Birchen pullet that showed Silver yesterday. I'm crushed.....now I have this rooster and no hens to breed to him except a pullet that is suppose to be silver, but is copper instead.

6 mos. down the drain.

On the flip side I have decided not to get chicks from Tom Culpepper and purchase Ecoglow brooders instead. I can't wait to see the savings in my power bill as they only use 18 watts vs. the 250 watt and 150 watt lamps.
So sorry to hear about your little birchen. That is a hard pill to swallow after taking care of and having hopes for a good bird. (((Hugs)))~ Life sucks sometimes!

We need to see pics of the Silver Marans!! Good luck on you hatches! Can't wait to see the Paints!!

Silkies in lockdown as of this morning. The Marans will go in my other hatcher tomorrow. Only 3 paint eggs went to lockdown and one looks iffy but I put it in anyways. I can tell there is a chick in there but it wasn't moving around like the others all were. Most of the lavenders look pretty lively.
The PO must not have been as rough on the silkie eggs as they were my Silver Sussex eggs. The SS box had a dent in one corner and the one egg on that side had gotten smashed. I'm suprised that I - (errr the Broody) hatched any lol. She has 3 little SS babies out of 6 eggs. They were packed great and all but our PO is horrid with eggs which is why I hardly ever buy shipped eggs if I can help it. They won't even call me to come pick them up here if the number is written on the box and it says 'Hold for pickup' . Who ever heard of that?

Yes the bearded one must be an Ameraucana or an Olive Egger. OEs can have either slate legs or greenish legs. I see slate here with most of mine. The beard is a dead giveaway that it is not a pure Marans. I'm not sure if that chick just happened to be in the photo or if the poster was just asking for an evaluation of the blue marans lol.

Coop de Grille: If they did not come from pure blues they won't be pure blue, they will be blue coppers. Watch the males and see if they get any coppering on their hackles or saddle feathers. Females don't always show coppering even if they are from copper based birds so the males are a better indicator although not 100%. They do all look to be nice Marans (the blue birds).

Yes, the blue ones are the ones I was wondering about. I bought both pure maran and mixed maran eggs from the same person. The black chicks are from a pure Ameracauna hen and a pure Wheaten Marans roosters. That would make them EE's and they will probably lay Olive colored eggs right? The lady I bought the eggs from has a pure Blue Marans pen, a pure BCM pen and then a pen with mixed hens and Wheaten Marans rooster. I got eggs from all three pens, still trying to figure who is who. The EE's are easy to figure out, most of them have beards.

Oh brother! I could've sworn I read that as "Silver Marans"!! Totally missed the beard on the EE too. I better get to bed earlier tonight! We got a new Post Master in our small PO, and she is a stickler for details! I'm almost afraid to order any more eggs for fear if they don't have the Postal forms attached, she would confiscate the parcel! That would really be a fight she didn't see coming! LOL!! Don't FUSS with my chickens!!!!!!!!!!!

she has silver marans eggs too, they are a bit behind those hatching right now tho. I just can't remember how far

I have Silver Marans like this http://www.artandverse.com/marans.html and Silver based cuckoo Marans (the regular cuckoos not goldens) eggs going into lockdown tomorrow.
I have 3 silver sussex chicks with a BCM broody momma now and silkies in lockdown today. I know it is confusing LOL! I had to put everything on my phone alarm calender in order to keep it all straight when to set what, lockdown what, give the broody what, whats hatching when, etc etc. Lets just hope I entered all the info right and my phone doesn't totally die haha.

I'm guessing that the Silver Marans chicks should be yellow? It looks like they are from the pics on that website. Vicki, was your one Silver Marans fellow yellow as a chick?

An Ameraucana hen x Wheaten Marans roo would make them Olive Eggers. Really kinda the same as an EE except they lay Olive eggs instead of the blue, off white, green, mint green that the EEs can lay. OEs are just more specific EEs, I guess, LOL!

Hi Cad! Speedy recovery to you my friend!

Oh and yes the Olive eggs are sooooooo worth the wait aren't they? Yesterday I had to restrain myself from putting another dozen of them in the 'bator.
I soooo want to turn that silly thing off for a while. I'm kinda tired of rearing chicks......and just as I say that my project Blue Laced Barnie pullet threatens to start laying as she is now stratching around in the nest boxes!!!!!!
