Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Awwww! Nice to know. My Marans are just now starting to be more like pets, rather than aloof chickens. When I go outside now, they all clamor at my feet. If I sit down on the deck while they are still out, I have company. Since I've been in the garden, which I lock them out of, they all line up and whine to come in with me!

I can see right now I'm going to have to sell some of these to make room for more. What a sickness this has become!
haha....some say sickness....I think its more a privilege to get to see into their daily lives. Not a day goes by that I don't laugh or smile at something they've done!

Haha just wait till your plants all get big. My girls see me in there pulling weeds and taking the old lettuce pieces out that got broke or wilty, they all line up outside the fence begging. They also like when I throw out caterpillars.

The one is the back is the smallest and has a really vaulted skull. It really sticks up. I'm afraid he will get pecked or something lol. I had one a blue with a really vaulted skull and it had a head injury and acted like it was gonna die for about 3 days, then slowly recovered. That is my blue roo that I have. I also had one lavender one before that died of a head injury...so sad. She had a really vaulted skull as well.
Yes, I have a gorgeous Blue Partridge female that had an extreme vault, and then got a swift peck on the head from an amorous suitor. She still gets her wry neck when she gets too excited, crumples up, and keels over, but the fits only last about 30 seconds, and she is right as rain. I will not purposely breed for vaulted skulls!

I was talking about the color of the one in the back; looks like it has buff spotting or maybe a Partridge influence?? Or is it just the light?

Absolutely! I've had chickens all my life, except for about an 18 year span. I am now amazed to learn so much from them, now that I have the luxury do just watch them! Oh yes, they whined last year too when I went into the garden and would chuck them some cherry tomatoes! Feathers flew over them!

No they are all the same weird color lol. I think it might just be his feathers..he was born a little sticky. I tried to wash him up and comb some of the goo off with a soft toothbrush but there is still some on him and on his head too. lol. He will probably really be a poofhead once I get all the gunk off his head lol.

Well, it's clouding up again, gotta go. Hopefully, I'll have more chick news in the morning! The Marans folks are thinking, "WTH??" Keep laughing, most of you that have Marans already have Silkies, and those that don't...never say, never!!

haha...I'll go ahead and say never lady! I can enjoy other's love for them, but don't want any for myself....no, siree!

stay safe lady!

Last year I let the chickens have free reign of the garden, I hardly got a tomato for myself, and I didn't really care. They let the cantaloupe, watermelon and squash alone for the most part. This year we fenced it in, haven't planted any warm crops yet, but got my onions, garlic, spinach, lettuce and sugar snap peas mulched in over the last few days. All this talk of potatoes has me wondering if I could grow some. Got some beautiful radishes the past few days.

I'm getting some Marans hatching eggs from my neighbor -who knew he had Marans?? Not me! I called to see if he had fertile eggs for my son's science class, and I've heard a roo over there - he says I'm welcome to hatch his eggs as long as I cull all of the Roos as he doesn't want anyone breeding from his line. I am soooo curious now. Can't wait to see his birds.

Evening all

Count me in on the sweetie pie Americauna!

I have B/B/S Wheaten Americauana who are 2mths old and they are the SWEETEST chickens!

They cry for me and line up at the fence line, whenever they can see me and then just crowd all around my feet, asking to be picked up!
I love them!!

They are in my only floor pen for youngsters (the rest are in bunny hutch type houses) and I'm finding either floor raising the Marans or raising them with the sweetie pie Americauna is making for really sweet Marans, too! Even in the wild child velociraptor phase!

THEN, as I sit there with a lap full of sleeping babies, I think "I can't BELIEVE I have another breed....am I NUTS?"
