So Donna, do I cross the Blues and Blacks with the Cuckoos?
I have done alot of reading on breeding, but not done anything myself yet.

You got eggs from my blue and black COPPERS so no don't cross those... you will have too many problems I wish it was that easy to make the egg color better. Solid blue or black (very hard to find) would help. You don't want the copper or gold leakage in the cuckoos.....

I have four Maran eggs in the bator right now, but ... I am on day 21 and I am holding out hope that they will hatch....
I will keep my eyes peeled for Blue Birchen Marans.... I will keep the Cuckoos (from different breeders, I don't want to screw up the babies) with cuckoos until I can find the right colour of marans to improve the egg colour.

not me! I have thought about buying some new cuckoos..... Didn't you get some from someone on BYC? how is the egg color? and leg feathering? Might be better to start over with cuckoos that have at least those 2 things then I can add the blue in the mix.

I am going to try a batch with the new roo and a pullet I have growing up and see what happens.

Are you asking me about birchens or about cuckoos lol. I did recently get some silver based cuckoos from someone so I could use them for a project (not blue cuckoos). They aren't laying yet as they just hatched lol. Leg feathering is very nice on some of them. I also have some new silver marans chicks.
I have a few pure blacks with nice leg feathering and great egg color. I am working on hatching more of those now.
I have blue and black birchen females and a blue birchen male they are definitely a work in progress! The egg color on the blue birchen girl could use some improvement, the black birchen girl is laying half decent but not dark enough for me yet.

Maybe by then I will have some darker eggs and you can get double "groceries"
