Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yah and Vicki when those girls start laying you are going to have waaaaaaaaaay too many eggs on your hands and for your 'bators so feel free to send the extra's this way and I will be more than happy to incubate them for you. *insert big cheesy grin here*
haha too funny! I can't believe how fast they are filling out now that they are in the grow out run. They are looking better everyday. Now here's to hoping that they give me nice shiny dark eggs!

When I get things sorted and in a good place, you are on the top of my list lady! Now to just get some more birds out of here. I am so excited to focus my energy on just one or two varieties of each breed. Will make my life so much easier and save on feed a ton

Yes Vicki I should be on your list for the blk birchen, but now you and flgardengirl both need to put me on the Silvers list too. I have been watching yours grow out. so I know you are doing well and moving in the right direction. I am going to try and put up some pictures of mine. After this weekend. I have 3 boys and 2 girls. The girls are starting to get nice color. The boys are getting color but some of it is cream. The last ones that I sold as "yard birds" had a ton of copper on them, these look tons better.

On the silvers, i dont have any yet (next week they arrive), well...except the cockerel that came out of my cuckoos, so more than likely will be about 3 yrs before Im ready to release any unless they are looking fantastic before then. I think this year's hatches of birchens will start showing me how far along I am when they start laying finally. Some are probably only a couple months away at this point, I'd guess. Only time will tell I suppose haha

Cream, if it is still shiny type feathers you can work with, its when a creamy to wheat colored feathers come in that are flat or dull looking are the ones that you won't want to use to breed forward. It won't throw what you need to progress.

I have a new young blue copper roo for you to pick at be nice he is still young lol. Also I clear picture of my eggs I"m getting atm.

His legs are lightly feathered.

I like the looks of him. I can't see him too clearly in the pics, so I got a couple ??'s.
How old is he?
Is it possible to get a closer shot of his comb and chest? :)

I have a question on my 8 week black copper roo! Is the hackle color supposed to be this light? All the others have a nice dark copper color. Will he grow out of it?
Thanks

Hey there! Not sure if anyone's answered yet, I'm still catching up. It's tough to tell from your pics, because, in the 2nd pic, you can see by your finger that the pics could possibly be overexposed, which would make the hackles appear lighter than they actually are. HOWEVER, just based on the these pics, IMO, yes, they are too light. I am not an expert, though! Anyone else?

Is there a way you can you sex black copper maran chicks (other than vent checking)? Color patterns or markings that are typical to roo or hens in the breed? I'm new to marans. I have 5 black copper chicks less than a week old and am wondering if there is a way to sex them..
