Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I tried to hatch some shipped Marans eggs, and only one hatched. It appears to be blue, and a pullet, correct? "She" is 7 weeks old in the photo. Thanks for any feedback!

I'm no expert by far but if its 7 weeks old with that much red on comb and wattles , when i compare to mine i'd say HE is a cockrel. But this is my very first flock ever so i could be wrong.

I can NOT wait until I'm able to see pros and cons before 3mths.... would save a lot of space, time, and FEED!!

I vote pullet on the little pale blue kid above!

haha...I must keep the blue boy! I need something to work with for blue coppers! haha...but if I end up with a really good start and I go visit my friend Krista sometime, I might be able to bring some eggs or birdies...possibly, just depends how I'm doing when the time comes.

Isn't it just shocking how much they've changed? Since I see them everyday I don't think I could really see it til I compared photos side by side. I'm loving how rich the copper is tho. I've got a bit of thinking to do on how I want to handle my next hurdle in working to create a line out of the birds I have here. The alternate boy with the best girls is producing chicks with stellar bodies, but lighter copper than I like, so I will take all the females I keep from that line and cross onto Gigantor or his well colored male offspring....but with the Males, I'm gonna have to be really careful how I use them. That is if they keep developing those nice beefy bodies further.

Oh, and I do think you will get there with your culling skills. I'm kinda working with a bit of an advantage with growing up in a poultry showing family and etc. It does save tons on feed, that's for sure! Especially when they start hitting the teenager phase and are packing feed away like fiends.
