Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Quote: The gold would be a DQ if they were admitted. It only shows on some chicks so keep an eye out for it and don't breed them. My one BIG offender is not in the breeding pens now.... I am VERY tempted to hatch them and see if it goes away. I have 17 eggs STARING at me to be hatched. They are such GOOD layers. I have been getting 4 eggs a day from 4 hens.

Well, all little dummies made it through the night! Tomatoes are really coming on now, and the plants are the biggest I have ever had here! They are all about 5 feet tall, and still growing! Lots of squash this morning, will eat some, freeze some, and cut some up for the chooks. As I was picking blackberries last evening, which are also thick this year, I wondered who else is picking berries for their chickens instead of themselves??

The chooks all go crazy for them, and me, I sure don't need the cobbler...

We have wild persimmons here that are delicious! The first year we moved here I was told about them. Must be an inside country joke, cause I sure don't remember them telling me to only eat the ones that were really ripe or on the ground! Picked my first persimmon that looked a lovely, bright orange color right off the tree and took a bite.

Spit it out right quick too!! I thought I'd never get that taste out of my mouth!!! Had to relay the story the next work day to all those smart fannies that they must be CRAZY to think those things tasted good! You should've heard them laughing for the better part of the day!

Finally, someone clued me in...

I read a story about someone historical eating a presimmon and it turning their mouth inside out.... it was very funny too.... I wish I could find it!

no sorting birds today...they're already panting and its just now 10 am. So its looking like I'll be working on my cull list for tuesday's sale and reading about feed rations and making some adjustments to the feeding routine to start conditioning for shows as they will be here before long

Morning all

Vicki and Debbi - keep cool!
(and don't you dare send that heat over to me!!)

Martha - I think sending your son to meet the firefighters OR having the firefighters send you to talk to a family who has lost their house to fire, would be a great thing.
13yr olds are just tough b/c they think they know everything.
one of the kids I work with burned his house down...very scary

Arielle - you're lucky - I haven't been able to plant my garden yet!
Once it got dry enough, we've been spending every spare moment making hay..

I think I'm going to need to buy started plants, if I want any produce before autumn...
