Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes, I believe I live with one such 'yahoo'. DS, all 13 years of experience and testosterone, decided to light a fire at 5pm no more than 20 feet from our main run on one of the 100 degree days we had last week.

I am also a member of the 'Lurk and Learn" club. I find that the more I learn, the less I know. So confusing, these chicken genetics.
Glad your chickens are ok !

I totally agree: the more I learn, the less I know. BUT on the bright side, this means we are learning!!

I really just don't know WHAT to do with that child. We spent most of the day putting ice in the waterers... uh Hello?? too hot for a fire today, son ~ and certainly not so close to the run.

I still can't tell for sure if my White Marans is a roo, I think I may have hatched 5 roos and 1 pullet. ARRRGH! My last hatch was 7 Roos to 3 pullets. Not good odds. My only 'maybe pullet' is not doing well at all. 'She's' cuckoo ~ Feathered out sooner, pretty dark. She cries, ALL the time, is always left behind and is half the size of her hatchmates. Broody spends most of her time waiting on this little one.
Take your boy to the Conservation Dept. and let him go out on a fire fighting mission, and let him see all the damage fires can do. That may wake him up. Yeah, when that testosterone kicks in, they are really impressed with themselves and their "knowledge"! There was a great sign on the local store's window that read: "Teenagers, leave home now while you still know it all!"

Can you post a pic of your White Marans? Maybe we can help you out. Poor little Cuckoo, is she getting enough food? Does she act like she may have a vision problem?

Me too! Then at my age, if I don't print out the stuff I really want to remember, my brain is like a computer. It seems to delete those temporary files all on it's own!

It's going to be another hot, steamy day here again today. Supposed to get to 96. No rain in sight, and the grass is crunchy and brown. Spent most of the day yesterday getting some 6 week old Silkies and my one SG, out to their new pen, and showing them the food and water, and shelter. They are not the brightest bulbs in the box!

Then finally got around to fixing the latches on the run gate. The gate was starting to settle, and it was getting really hard to get the hasps lined up to lock the gate. Had to wear my red bandana to keep the sweat out of my eyes, and that really ticks Pip off! He's just going to have to get used to it until I can get some blue ones; the dog watched my back for me.

I do believe the skunk has moved on! Seems like this year, we have an over abundance of rabbits too! I can't remember the last time I have seen so many in the yard early in the mornings, they are everywhere!

Zuchinnis are coming in like blazes! Tomatoes are there and heavy, although I just noticed aphids on my plants!

Got to get rid of those little buggers quickly. Green tomatoes everywhere, but not one red one yet! C'MON ALREADY!!!

Mornin' Vicki! Yup, hot here too, although right now it's really nice and cool. Need to get out and feed the chooks..

Today will be the cool off after a few hot days, though I see you all are giving me a preview of what is to come.

The tomatoes should do well in this hot weather! I just got mine in last week and picked up free transplants at a clearance sale. Like I need 36 more to plant.

A buyer cancelled this morning. I'm almost relieved--one less interruption in making new coops for the juveniles.

Glad the skunk has migrated--at least you can have rabbit stew, far tastier than skunk! LOL

Tricia.... I see you lurking.... How are those babies?

The babies are doing fabulous. I put away the heat lamp early due to the heat. I will have to go out and get updated photos. Strong, healthy, no deformities. One blue EE or Ameracauna that is very little. It keeps trying to join the two babies that hatch under the broody a week after, but mama knows there is a difference.

Makes me kinda nervous when I heard you were getting rid of your cuckoos..... But, like someone told me once, I am still in the dating phase with a lot of breeds, so only time will tell.

Did you get rid of them because the red kept coming through? Is the red a person thing?
( I don't have the APA book, so I don't know of that would be a DQ or if cuckoo is even recognized.)
