Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

A little cooler here today, Yay! Foxes are still terrorizing us. Got traps and a 22, still haven't been able to solve the problem. My poor chooks are stuck in their runs night and DAY. I just can't commit to a LGD. Don't want to take the plunge until I'm ready to dedicate myself to training.

13 yr old is currently on his way to DE to his 28 yr old sister's house. We call it 'Tara Boot Camp'. I hope it helps. The fire was the final straw, I won't bore you all with the other stuff, just don't want to spend my day yelling, or following him around as if he's a toddler. So Marans...

Here is the Cuckoo who isn't thriving, Debbi, I don't think she's got trouble seeing. She hits the waterer spot on when she walks up to it. She does lay down when the others are eating... and she fusses ALL the time. In this picture, they are just shy of 4 weeks. They have not been out in the grass for a few days because of the heat and foxes and the others are tearing around, pecking, and investigating. She, lies down.

And shot of very pretty face with DS, I feel certain she's a pullet.

White Marans... Is it a she? Or a He? I know this is a bit early. Just shy of 4 weeks. This little guy is the one that was dried to the bottom of the incubator at my son's school. Now the Sole Survivor from the school hatch. Two were lost the morning after they came home ( I think from over handling at school) 2 were lost to predators since then. 'He' seems to be doing well and is much larger than the cuckoo Marans hatched at home, he rivals the English Orps:

Hi Debbie missed you all so much!! We are getting pounded by a tropical storm today ironically named DEBBIE LOL!!! Got over 4 inches of rain last night and more on the way so the gardens are doing great. I've been canning and freezing salsa like crazy all week. We must of got 60 lbs of tomatoes thus far. They did horrible last year but this year they are doing great.
The chickens got all their open air coops soaked from rain blowing in sideways last night and so I spent all morning cleaning everything up and moving the moblie chicken tractors to higher and/or less soaked ground :D Had to give my baby cuckoo marans and the silver cuckoos a dose of Corid this morning too. I know that cocci is on its way with all the heat and humidity going on and one little guy looked very droopy this morning and not wanting to eat. Boy they have all grown so much!
Leneeeeeetttttteeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!! HELLO! I've missed you! Sounds like you've been a busy beaver over there! About the same here only with different stuff. I just got home from work and brought home a little something special I didn't really want. I banged up my big toe with a pallet jack gone awry....so I have that all wrapped up since it was bleeding through the top of my shoe...blech. I guess I'm a true klutz.

Oh....and I have my silver marans babies...a dozen of them and can't believe how much they've grown. I need to move them outside, hopefully this week. Oh...and I have some awesome birchen eggs cooking in the incubator...so does Kim! I can't wait to see what hatches! We'll have to compare silvers soon!

Hey Vicki, I'm so glad Lenette popped in! Were we saying how lovely and cool it was this morning?? It's 100* in the shade here right now.

Thurs. & Friday, they are calling for 102-104*, and still no rain in sight. This is getting very ugly...Got to go check on my babies, hope they are ok still.

i hear ya lady....it was really crappy this morning and afternoon unloading truck at work in this heat! The high heat will hit us on Wednesday here, but sure am praying that both of us will get some relief soon. I'm gettin ready to head out and check on animals soon myself and hope indeed that everyone is alright. Any thoughts I had of doing some building in the shade are all out the window right now. Especially since my foot is killing me!
