I hear ya...it ended up being right on the cut off for me takin birds, but decided to go for it. took extra containers for water and spaced them out in the provided pens a bit more than usual to give them some breathing room. luckily the birds are in the shade the whole night.Well it was a pleasant day today..... perfect temp to mix 3 55gal barrels of feed for the chickens. 86 was the projected high. Tomorrow 96 so I will do some moving and cleaning to thin my brooder boxes out. Going to get water from the creekalways a good way to cool down. I don't think I will be going this weekend or next to sell chicks under this heat. Last I saw Sat and Sun 100 and 99 respectively.![]()
I got the PMsent you one back.![]()
We have Anatolian Sheperds and no they are not trained .... it is genetic. They bond with their herd/flock and protect them. We have a female that decided on her own that she was to guard our chickens. She spends most of the time in the chicken yard. We bring her in to the house in the late afternoon early evening to eat and socialize with us. By 9:00 she insists on going back out to her chickens. We have some longhorns in the area around the chicken yard and if the bull comes near the pen Amber goes bullistic on him. Yet if we open the gate and let her out she'll walk right by the bull with no fuss.I've been looking at Great Pyrenees. I've yet to see any that are already trained. Do tell.... The ones I find seem to be either in Texas, OR incredibly expensive, but so far.... never trained.
ETA: Wait a minute.... what happened to 3rivers post about LGDs being trained? it was like she told me that money was falling from the sky. No wonder it disappeared. too good to be true.

THat is good news. My hay supplier lost 5000 bales and the barn thanks to Irene. It meant a tough winter, short on hay , and horses got some pretty crappy hay for weeks on end. Really needed a good hay season this year. Hoping everyone gets in three cuts.Glad you got the June hay in, !![]()
awwww....how sweet! you got 70 acres for me to come be your neighbor?! hahahahahaYikes - we lost a lot of barns and indoors in our area, too.
I really hope they at least had insurance to replace the barn....
THREE cuts?!?
We're working on our FIRST cut right now!
We always count ourselves lucky, if we can get done with two cuttings here!
I WISH we could get in three!!
On a good note - we just got 70 more acres to hay from a local guy who is retiring!!
Hope everyone's weather settles down!
Vicki - rest up and be sure to take time to heal!!
That is an understatement! My son brought his mixed pit/ lab up here to stay for a while. I will say he does not like cats.... But so far he hasn't looked at the chicks to hard. But then again every time he gets within 20 feet of the coop I tell him to go lay down. He listens pretty good.![]()
