Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

haha...I've been hearing I'm hoarding my birdies more than once on here....I'm not meaning to...just want good quality and have them all test mated and producing more consistent results that I feel comfortable with. I don't want to send Marans out into the world that won't give someone else really good prospects. Especially in the birchens. They are in so much need of improvement overall...especially with all the birds I've seen as examples that I'm going to be doubly careful. Just my perfectionist nature I guess....goodness knows I'm not making any money going this way at the moment hahha
Well, keep it up lady! I wish more people were that way!!

I should have highlighted the neck- under the male in the standard as well, it also suggests copper markings. Also, every male of Blue Copper or Black Copper that I have grown out has had the black or in my case, the blue where the hackles are parted. I would think that it is not an issue since they can have copper markings there, or not, as indicated in the color standard.

Neck— Hackle : Lustrous deep copper, neither yellow nor mahogany. Some feathers, especially in the lower hackle, may include a narrow dark stripe through the middle of each feather, terminating in a point near its lower extremity.
Front of neck : Black with markings of deep copper.

Vicki~ I know that you are hoarding them for good reasons, I was just funnin' wit'cha.....besides I also know I can wait until you are comfortable with sending them out. I appreciate what you are doing with them. Good on you Miss.

No worries, I just don't want anyone to think my intentions are bad with not releasing them yet. I just can see what they can be in my mind's eye and won't be satisfied until I am able to make more progress. Kind of like with the black and blue coppers. I'm doing well, but can still see areas where I can improve them. Its getting more exciting to think where they might be in a year or two even. I can't wait for the day when I have small flocks of the black coppers, blue coppers, black birchens and blue birchens. I'll probably end up spending tons of time with them. I still some days can't believe how far they've come, especially since I almost got out of them more than once with how far I felt I had to go when I first started.

Took a few shots of my birchens that are my own project. These are two generations removed from the crap I started with. They look nothing like what I started with and know I have a long ways to go still, but am pleased with the major differences I'm seeing. I'll hold onto these until I see what sort of prospects I have from my other grow out pens and from those eggs I put into lockdown later tonight.

she's cropped in tight from a group shot, so I've lost the crispness on her...she really doe have a nice single comb, not the blob of pink you see haha

He's a split for gold, but has good heft and size on him. One serration on the second point of the comb, but I can deal with that after the mess I started with
Lovely! Sigh... I have been bitten by the birchen bug...

Sorry, I missed the FRONT OF NECK , you would think they would use Back of neck if they use Front of Neck. Sorry, I'm anal.

Markings is a defined quantity ? Very vague to me. LOL

I like this pullet. She is 4 months old and so chunky. She is a little dark for blue copper but I like her shape.

I want blue coppers as well as blue birchen..black birchen...black copper....

Ok I actually have limited myself. I am going to get rid of my blue cuckoo cockerel...I think. I just don't have room for another color! sigh...

She does indeed look like a chunker! Will be interesting to see how she continues to grow and what her egg color will be!
