I saw life in the Wheaten Ams eggs, not so much in the Marans. It could be they were not as fertile with the heat too. We will see. I already have a collection started![]()
Good luck!

Just checking/reading the thread- not sure what the answer would be, guess it depends on your overall goal is- dark eggs, breeding to the SOP etc. You could always do some test mating between the 2 lines just make sure to keep any offspring hatched marked so you can keep track of them. Good Luck and the thread does tend to move fastSeems like if you are not in the small marans clique you just get ignored. Maybe someday I'll measure up.
not us, we do have a good laugh from time to time as the different ones are crowing. Our Marans crow seems to be deeper than the other breeds we have and doesn't always carry as far. Our neighbors can hear the higher pitched ones easierDoes anybody include the sound of the crowing when you decide which cockerels to keep? As if I need one more thing to worry about---but some of these black copper marans have the most long, drawn out crow. Is the way they crow hereditary? My founding cock has a long drawn out crow, and so do some of his offspring--at least the dominant ones that are crowing. I'd like to keep one whose crow is a bit shorter for the benefit of my neighbor, but I don't have a whole lot left to choose from.
Im gonna wait til fall after all this crazy humidity and heat takes a breakVicki when are your replacement eggs coming? If mine don't hatch, I can just collect more.
Cadeau - Thanks! it is all good.... I can rehatch..... I quit hatching you knowIf I can't stop myself.... nature will do it for me.![]()

Quote: I'm running the de-humidifier in the hatching room. Dries down the humidity and warms the room at the same time. Maybe a little too much.
Quote: We are not nearly as hot, but the humidity is WAY up! It has rained almost everyday for a week and a half. Good and bad. The creeks is running but the runs are wet. We got a break today and I think a little yesterday too.
Remember the hen is 102. THe LG fluctuates a bit as it cycles. I picked up human thermometer and tracked the spikes. I was very concerned because the temp was not an even 100 ALL the time. When the chicks hatch just fine I stopped monitoring so closely. I check when I turn the eggs 2-3 times a day.
If you know the days of incubation, you can use candling to check the air cell (if you can see the air cell) and use that to judge if the RH is correct for your area.

haha - I think you're right! (or else he's hoping he's not next!)Agreed about the Marans crow not carring as far and being deeper than other rooster types. I do not know about heredity of crow... but I do know the fewer roosters I have, the less the dominant (read as Loudest) one crows!
I processed 5 young cockerals on Sunday and my main rooster is now very quiet. I think he dose not spend so much time letting the little guys know who is boss.
