Oh Debbi, I'm praying for your Uma and all the creatures trying to endure this heat. At 4:30 a.m. today it was 88 degrees outside, just horrible, and right now just after sunset sunset the temp is still 96. When it doesn't cool down at night it just makes it so hard on everyone. The weather people are saying that Thursday the daytime temps may get down to 90 with a chance of scattered showers, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Thank you! The last time I checked the temp in the house last night, it was at 89*, IN THE HOUSE! Not conducive for a good night's sleep. I lived along time without AC, but when I got it, about 8 years ago, I got spoiled. Back to being Amish I guess?? It's 90* in here right now at 9:20pm. Thank God for fans!!

I have central a/c (over 30 years old!) that has been running 24/7 for I don't know how long, but it just can't keep up with this relentless heat. Right now in the house it is 85 degrees, and probably won't get down in the upper seventies in here til 5 or 6 am. I've been trying to sleep with a wet washcloth on me and the fan, but it's a no-go... I have to get up at 3:30 a.m. to go to work. Guess I shouldn't complain though, because it's 94 right now in the chicken coop with wide open ventilation and fan running.
I sure hope your mare pulls through all of this. We've had summers like this before, no biggy, but I don't remember these dry spells lasting this long, as well as the high heat. Something has to give, and it had better do it soon! I'm not a big water drinker, but I've consumed more water in the last month that I have in the last 2 years! Might be a good thing for me, I keep reminding myself that some people pay for this kind of heat and humidity in spas!!
Just looked on the weather and 40% chance of rain from about 3pm tomorrow afternoon to Thursday morning. I am praying we get a good amount. I don't know how much more of this heat me or the animals can take.
Oh yikes.....the weather has been just brutal for you all, hasn't it? So sorry to hear. We're pretty lucky for the most part with our weather, and are pretty used to >90* weather but holy smokes.. IN THE HOUSE? So sorry to hear. I have a question that may take your minds off stuff.....(probably not, just my ego)
I hatched one single BCM from the assortment eggs that I won in a raffle, and the baby is feathering out differently than the ones from a previous hatch. She's got some mottled chest feathers and only mild leg feathering. My previous kids have had the "street sweeper" (to coin a phrase) leg/feet.... there is absolutely no copper showing anywhere. I'm going to post a picture and apologize right now.... ahem, horrible photography folks, but any suggestions? Is this a Mottled Maran? Is there such a thing? Darling though.... just lemme know... I'm thrilled with your expertise.... (takes bow)
The wee Ameraucana on the right was hatched in the same two day span and is half the size.... that thing's a monster bird.... beauty.... folks, what do I have???

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and to breeding. I've had chickens pretty much all my life but never tried to better any of them and I got hooked on Marans and now I'd like to try. I have some Wade Jeane at around 16 weeks old and two batches of Bev Davis at 8 and 12 weeks old. Out of the Wade Jeane batch, the guy below is my best BC roo but I am concerned about his coloring. He is a nice looking guy with good leg feathers, a pretty good comb, I think his tail is not too upright and looks like he is going to be a big full bird but the copper coloring is pretty dark and I don't see any color coming out on his saddle feathers. Also, I do see some color coming out on his wing and I don't think that is right. I know the pictures aren't that great but from what you can see, is this guy going to be worth working with? Thanks for your time!
