Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

oh - I thought the other day he said that they were going to get the Marans in the next printing...that we'd get an insert right now (on the Ameracauna thread)

Yes, we will include the Marans in a supplement to the next printing of the SOP. There will be no insert, it will be printed in the back of the SOP along with the White Serama. Splash Modern, butterscotch Calls and the other breeds that missed this edition.

Walt, When do you think the next printing will come out? Maybe I can ask for it for my big birthday present!

Ok, who says chickens are stupid?? I just put some ( a lot) ice cubes in the chick waterer for the 3 lone Marans who are still in the house.Turn around to fill their feeder, turn back, and Wheatie Pie is sitting on top of the waterer. If looks could speak, she was saying, "Ahhhhhhhhh..." Pretty smart for a chicken so young!

DH and Ihave always liked animals and have had creatures since we got married, but the chickens were our biggest surprise. Generally portrayed as stupid--really? Some are smarter than some people I've met. ANd goodness knows the roosters can look like a velocirator when necessary. We are rather impressed by them. Born to survive!

:gig Absolutely!!

I still find it rather remarkable that one of my Marans hens sees my dog as second in command, and if I'm not there to fulfill her needs, she goes to him! Rather clever if you think about it.

Hey Vicki, How are those raspy girls doing today??
They are about the same...the one has a pale comb, but have given them fresh water every two hours and get water bottle ice cubes to keep it cool inbetween and got watermelon as well. Tomorrow looks to be the last day with 100+ temps for at least a handful of days, so if they can make it through tomorrow, we'll be ok I think.

About all you can do, except maybe antibiotics if they get too bad? The weather here is reported to be at 100*, but on my shaded porch, it is reading 106*! It is 96* in the house!! So far, the only one showing any stress from all of this, is my old girl dog, Uma. At 14 1/2 years, she is starting to peter out on me. She has not eaten much in the last couple of days, and I am bracing myself for the worst case scenario. God not now, I just couldn't take it...
