Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well, on the good side here, there is no one to get crabby at, except maybe the bumper crop of kittens!! I just saw 2 more new faces last night! Anyone need some really cute barn kitties?? They come from a long line of great mousers and snake killers. Someone, anyone?? Take one two, or ten!

haha...If I wasn't drowning in kitties myself I'd think about it! I have several people waiting til the little ones get older, but until then.... haha Maybe you can have a sale...buy so many chickens, get a free kitten? haha

:yuckyuck   Maybe bugs would go first?  I had a dog that ate all my tomatoes--could figure out why all the big fist size green tomatoes were not ripening! :gig

Oh NO! Pip has been watching that garden since the plants got tall, he knows what's in there, and he would kill for a tomato! Bugs be dashed, he be right in there with them chowing down!

HA! You don't think I've already tried that one?? Plus the fact they aren't used to being handled, so they would not be so cuddly right now. A few of them are getting really friendly, but the rest scatter if you go to pick them up. Sure wouldn't be hard to catch them, all I'd have to do is throw some eggs or bread in a crate, and they'd ALL be in there!

I'm new to this site and to the Marans breed and had a question. I just hatched out 4 Black Copper Marans chicks that are now 10 days old. 1 of them is starting to get copper on its wing feathers but the other 3 are not? does this by chance mean that its a Roo and the others are pullets or am I just being hopeful

Thanks for any help with this...
Hey Girl!

Congrats on your hatch!!!!! Are these 4 out the 6 eggs you had shipped ? That's great for shipped eggs. Good for you!

Quote: DH would put out hava heart traps, then put the kitty in a dog crate in the kitchen. ONly got out if I picked it up and sat on my lap for a few minutes then back in. Works best on the younger ones. Had one old tom that lived on my porch in a rubbermade bin lined with sheep skins. Never could pat him, but he'd let me peek in and place a dish of chow. I don't do strays and wild cats anymore . . . . chickens are easier!

Hi Everyone!

Boy have I got some reading to do to catch up ya'll. *Smile*

Thanks for the imput on that rooster Wynette and Debbi.

Wynette~ Regarding his neck length, this was not his normal stance, I will get some more photos of him. He was standing all scrunched up. He is a wild one I tell ya.
He is adjusting very slowly to his new surroundings, slowly. Atleast now he is no longer trying to climb the fence to get away from me when all I do is just walk past his coop on my way to another coop down the hill.

Elisha~ Good news on those eggs! Continued good vibes coming your way.

I now have 6 broody hens I am dealing with. GEESH!!!!!!!!! It's out of control!
Bad Betty is setting tight and very determined to stay. She was off and on the nest for a few days, but now she hasn't budged for the last 3 days. She is getting some eggs.
My Black Copper hen has also decided that she to would like to be broody. My 2 oldest Blue Copper hens are still at it...in the same nest box. Must find time to get everyone set up with their own spaces and get some eggs under all of them. I'm getting like 1 egg a day now with all these broodies happening.

Forgot this question:

If you are an NPIP tester, can you do your own chickens?? That seems kind of tainted to me if you can. Whose to say someone wouldn't fudge the results?? Sorry all, I am such a skeptic any more, and this all seems to be more or less of another gubberment intrusion to me.

Hi Debbi, I had typed a reply to this yesterday, and just when I was trying to submit it, we got a strong windy storm here and the Internet went down, so I don't think it posted. Anyway, I will try to remember what I was going to say: at my local poultry club, there is a guy who is a judge and has been into showing chickens for quite a while who shared some history with me. Arizona being a big cattle state back in the day had allowed people to test their own herds. I don't remember why the change, probably lack of compliance, but rules changed such that people could no longer test their own animals and poultry were included in that. Leon Ewer was a well known poultry person here and he used to test for people, but he died 2 years ago and now apparently there is no one doing it in Arizona. I am going to check with the University of Arizona, they have an agricultural program and I was told they might have their students do it as a training exercise. I agree I am also a skeptic when it comes to these kinds of things, but selling chicks is part of how I can afford this hobby with the high cost of feed and I would like to be able to ship to expand my market.
