Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Barb, Please take the quart water dish out as they will all drown, If you must use fill it half way with rock or marbles.

Don, I've been using those dishes for 4 years now. I know, not the number of years you have been doing things, but I haven't had anybody drown yet. (It would actually be a challenge for them to drown in those dishes at the height I've got them. They have to work to drink!) But I do appreciate your comment!!! (I only use the deep dishes with broodies. I use shallow dishes on the ground with chicks being raised without moms. And, quite frankly, I figure they are at more risk of drowning.)

I have lost chicks to DEEP water dishes and broody mamas. I will not do that again.

Do yourselves a favor, get to a library and find a college level animal breeding book . AND try to find one on poultry too. You may need to get it thru interlibrary loan. THen start reading like it is a semester class! You do need to learn the lingo. Every field of study has it's own unique and specific language. Find diagrams of chicken body part names. Find the color genetic sites. Read, read ,read. I read my old genetics book and choked at the statiscs of genetic selection-- you can skip that part, just understand the princliple of it. Give youself time to absorb the information and understand how to use it. Read, read, read. Identify who the long time breeders and judges are on BYC so you can listen very closely: Fowlman, snowbird, bobblosl, NYreds, and MANY MORE.

I love that you noticed!!! I had to work on that for a bit. Ended up using a plastic ruler cut in half to clip the dishes over - set out from the wall. Allows Broody mama to be aggressive with the dish (it slides on the ruler) without making a complete mess immediately! :D  And you will notice that I have food and water on opposite sides of the box. I have learned that Broody mamas are not concerned about mess. Just showing the kids where stuff is. Just me that cares about the mess.
your set up is awesome! If you have time, can you remove a dish and show me what you have done in hooking the dishes on? I'm really thinking of this set up and doing it. How big is that box? I had boxes made for my girls just like that ( minus the door) and I believe the nest boxes are 20x20x20 high. I wanted them nice and roomy for my girls and they love them! I'm setting eggs tomorrow, I believe I can get a door made for mine, but I am really interested in that set up with the dishes!

Hi Everyone,
I come on here and read once in a while. I do not breed, but I have BCM's from a breeder. I got them at one week old and raised them from babies. They were born the last week of March. I would like to introduce you to my girls as well as a pretty roo I gave to my brother.

This is Marion. She is the top of the pecking order.

This is Maggie. her coloring is wrong, and she is the runt of the group, but is the most easy going girl in the group. Her personality is wonderful.

This is Michelle. She is the biggest of the three. I always call her the one with the hairy legs....lol

Here is the roo I gave to my brother because my hubby won't let me have one. He has a boo boo on his comb because he was being a bad boy and chased my brother's wife out of the run and got his comb shut in the door.

Some of my first eggs. The first one was laid by my Buff Orpington. The second was laid by Michelle, and the third one was laid by Maggie. Not perfect, but very delicious!

Thanks for looking!
