Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Donna, Sure would like to see your male bird. These blended males as long as they have proper hackle undercolor and shanks and feet the correct color. When picking breeder fowl do not worry about them being to the SOp. Sop fowl do not always produce SOP fowl. It is always averages.
Totally 100% agree on breeders not needing to be SOP to be able to produce them. Most of it is about knowing how to pair birds together to give the best chances of better quality

Hey Don, what do you think about the BCM girls that are that boy's sisters I posted in the post after him? They are really well balanced and if they were tamer (I've been so freaking busy), I could have gotten better shots of them.

Here's that Blue Copper boy I was talking about earlier. He's a good 2 months or more behind the others, so his eyes are just now starting to change and needs to pack on some good size before I can compare him to the one I just posted.

Vicki, I like the Dark females that you said were related to the BC male. They look to have the same Marans type that the males has. Now you will have to figure out the male to breed them too.

The Blue Copper males has everything we would want in a Marans male at this age.

I hope some of the new Marans people are looking at these pictures as these are what we are looking for in a Marans.

Vicki, Impose the imaginary box over this picture and visulize this male inside of it. Looks to be a perfect fit from where I am at.

I would not worry about anything on the Comb at the point in the game unless it was a DQ and this bird does not have that. Forgot to also very nice foor and shank feathering.

Thanks! Been working hard on the leg feathering. Most of the girls I started with had none, so yipee!!

I was just thinking on who I would breed these girls to when I was out shutting up birds for the night. I was thinking of test mating them with three different males. Their father (he has a lot lighter tone, I can tell who their mom is just based on who I had in the pen, and she is as solid black as they come, but think because I have a good percentage that come with color out of that mating, that it might work), to Gigantor and to my splash boy in the avatar. What do you think? I'm simultaneously working on the blues and blacks, but keep the black to black matings separate as you suggested.

haha Ahhhh...now its all becoming clear haha! I'm happy to help when I've got time lady. I need to look over your email you sent last night. I currently have about 30 emails waiting for replies, so it might take me a day or two, but have tomorrow off to sort birds here, do chores like laundry, work on club stuff and catch up on emails!

Take your time.... no rush. That was not trying to put pressure on you...

haha too funny. Most days I don't know whether I'm coming or going lately. I have under a month left of my boss being gone...and I'm praying she comes back, or if she doesn't, that things will sort themselves out. I'm tired, but so happy that I started on the poultry club show stuff so early this year. Otherwise I'd probably be crying in a corner hiding under a blanket!
