Vicki, I think I would go the way you are thinking when you say you are thinking three different males for the dark pullets. This way it will give you an idea of what will work in the future.

Whats really great about having these nice Marans is when you are out with them the good ones stick out like a sore thumb. Once we see a good one we will always know what to look for in the future. next to seeing the actual fowl a picture is good.

Sounds good. That's kind what I was thinking on test mating with all three boys, plus they are all from different breeders and have things the other doesn't, so am hopeful that a few years from now I'll have a nice solid line of birds as my goal is to eventually merge them bit by bit.
My problem, like you said, is that I haven't found a line of birds out there yet that I love everything about, so figured I just knuckle down and see if I could get one going that has what I see in my mind that Marans should look like.
I'll probably keep asking ya questions and have photos to look at, but its good to know that I'm making some decent progress!

Hey all. Over the weekend I took a look at some of the other breed threads and found some very troubling trends going on. I seen picture after picture with young fowl with SPLIT WINGS. No one seemed to be aware of the problem. Will not single out any of the breed threads as I do not post on them.

If you find a split wing bird it must be culled if you are breeding to the SOP. The thing about split and twisted wing it can be spotted within the first couple of weeks mostly.

Good word Don. I've had problems with all the breeds and color varieties I've bought hatching eggs, chicks, or breeding stock from, because I think it hasn't been strictly dealt with.

Vicki, With what you are doing and the record keeping you will be able to carry your own line into the future without going out for new blood. Just keep a few extra birds over that would work in your program if needed.

When you say a few extras, do you mean maintain the separate lines of birds I already have and such in case I need to outsource from the line I'm creating so I have source of fresh blood? That's what my thoughts had been to do, if you have a better way, I'd love to hear!

I bought some chicks and hatching eggs at Newnan and EVERY chick has Split wing.... having to start over

expensive too. I will be selling the pullets for layers and the roos are going to the roo guy, someone will eat them.
