Based on colour (light), I think they are both male.

(Females would be darker.)

Males can be be dark (1 copy of the gene) or light (2 copies of the gene). Females can only be dark because they can only carry one copy of the gene. Your babies are light .... I'd be asking for an exchange. Try to get something darker.

**** it. Alright. I'll call him tomorrow. Thankfully he is not far.

The rest are much smaller. Can you sex them younger?

Cuckoos are easier than most because of the sex-linked colour factor. Your odds are better with darker chicks although it isn't a guarantee. But light is for sure male.

(If you get a choice, try to pick chicks with a tail angle like your number 2 chick. Number 1 is too upright/sharp/abrupt. Try to get that smoother back/tail like number 2 if you can.)

Hi Zanna
I think Don is talking about my 7 month old Cottage Hill/Skyline Poultry rooster, shown here.
Thanks, Lisa

He comes from Cottage Hill lines from James Meeks breedings. IMHO he stacks up pretty well against the French standard, at least as far as I can tell. There are no side sprigs on his comb (I wish it were a bit smaller and perhaps 1 or 2 points less), short toes, squirrel tails or white feathers. He has nice shank feathering I think and it looks to me like his coloring is correct. Please forgive the lack of hackle feather on the back of his neck, I think one of the hens gave him what-for and yanked some out as there is a definite "bald spot" where they should be. I've tried to get a nice standing picture of him to overlay the silhouette of the 45 degree angle of the perfect Marans, I think he's pretty close. I'm interested to know your thoughts!

Thanks, Lisa

Thanks elless! Does he need a new home or do you need a hen? :) I see you are in the Pacific Northwest, where are you? I am a little South of Salem, Oregon.

Shucks.

I am torn between waiting and calling him right now. I don't want to jump the gun and possibly insult him but I don't want roosters. Ugh I hate making decisions.

Now please excuse my ignorance, but he also carries silver ones. Is it at all possible that these are light because of that. I am not educated on genetics or the differences at all. I know nothing lol

Hi all, take a look at the shanks and toes on this male. This is the color I want on BC Marans and this foot feathering is great
