Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'd also like to be kept in the loop on this Don. Do you think there is a possibility of having it recorded for those that can't make it?
Vicki, we have plenty of time to try and lineup someone. I believe my son has a movie Camera. I will find out tomorrow and we can go from there.

sounds fantastic! I do think that a lot of what comes up on the thread are things universal to all poultry, so would be helpful to really create that deeper foundation of DQs and faults by visually being able to identify it in their own flock after a demonstration like this. Once those are understood, it really does become like second nature to be able to identify and cull for.

Sounds like a fun project to work on! I've got some more birds I'm hoping to get some pictures of if we don't get hit with the nasty weather they are talking about tomorrow. Hopefully I can get some decent shots.

Random question for you. When you are conditioning your birds for show, did you up their protein levels really high? I know some do.

Vicki, I feed a high protein feed from day of hatch. Puts a lot of bulk on them without the fat. We have to really watch changing the feed ration during conditioning as they will go into a molt. I will give a pebble or two of a real high protein and fat dog food. When I am showing I most of the time keep everything I plan on showing in seperate cages. My main thing in conditioning is handling them everyday and I like giving them a peck of over ripe Banana,

That's what I was wondering about mostly, whether you add dog food or such things like that. I do feed a higher protein and try to stay consistent so I don't end up with birds molting about the time I want them to start being ready for showtime. I have what I call show row set up, where all my birds go to hang out til its time for show. It really does help a ton! I haven't done the over ripe banana however. What's the benefits of that?

The over ripe Banana just make them want to be your friend once they get used to eating it. I start my young fowl on the Banana when they are about one month old. Plus the Banana has lots of potassium.

Alrighty This was quite an adventure and I think this chicken breeder has a crush on me...

Anyway he didnt' believe me that they were males so he "made" me keep the darker one and let me pick out 2 more dark ones. So in the end I went home with 3 Marans.

Do these look better? lol

Third one I have now

The bottom one is still a roo. See the head spot.... VERY BIG, that is a roo.... he also has no tail another indicator sometimes.

Like Barred Rocks they can be sexed at hatch

There is also a Cuckoo Marans thread... I just can't find it. It is not very active though.
