Vicki, As you know I was a long time breeder of Modern Game large and small. On your Birchen do you see any difference in the lacing on the chest between the Mulberry face and the red Face. If you would like I could PM Walt and just see what would be acceptable with the APA. I know for a fact they are trying to close up some of the variations in the different breeds. This could be good and bad. Let me know.

Hey Don, sorry! Sat down to answer your post and heard a commotion outside....my herd of goats were out and raiding the freerangers feed. That's a big no no around here with my big birds. They were doing quite the job of fending them off, it was pretty funny

Anyways...you bring up another thing I've been pondering. When you say lacing on the breast, do you mean birchen lacing? If so, the last time I read the proposed standard and couldn't find anything regarding whether the birchen color would be allowed onto the breast or not like in the Moderns. I would be curious to know the answer for that as this last year I started breeding towards only the neck collar and a solid breast. I do however, to answer your question, do notice there is a greater tendency for the birchen lacing to be on the breast and does look quite nice, in those with the more mulberry face color.

I would love it if you could see what Walt would think. I feel there's quite a bit of ambiguity with the birchens in the Marans right now. It would really help to know what the standard would be more than likely be as it is hard to cull correctly for them with all the variations that there could be. Its kind of been a bit of a guessing game and been holding onto some birds that I'm not actively using at the moment because I was concerned about what direction they would take. Now that I'm starting to see some serious progress here, I don't want to undo what I've done or breed myself into a corner so to speak

We have Maran eggs and I see people selling them just as chicken eggs all the time and I have eaten them and never noticed the difference in taste from any other chicken egg, except when compared to a store bought egg or course. They are selling duck eggs for $3 and $5 a dozen, I would consider them more rare and gourmet then any chicken egg. Can anyone tell me what is so rare and gourmet about Maran eggs or is there some new breed of Stupid bird out there I don't know about? LOL

When the standard of perfection was approved for the BCM, it was approved for legs with feathering... Which is a whole different thing than what you were reading about...
