Very good information to know. I'm hoping we can get a proposed standard squared away before too long. Another question for you while you are on here. If a Marans were to have a mulberry face, would that be a DQ?A typical Birchen has the mulberry face and lacing in the chest. Bev Davis has just told me that the Marans will not have the dark face nor the lacing in the chest. I don't know what is out there in the birchen Marans community, but it does seem strange for a Marans to have a gypsy face.
This is what Bev has said. "The mulbury is caused when a bird has a lot of malanizers which turns the red parts of the bird to black, it can also cover the silver in the hackles as well as make legs black"
The APA can work with what the Marans Club finally ends up describing as Birchen unless it is so far off that it does not accurately describe birchen at all. I would guess that the description is still in the works from what Bev has said.

Thanks, Walt.
Okay, don't laugh...is "mulberry" the same as "gypsy"?
GOOD question - and, if it DID have a mulberry face and it was a fault, not a DQ, how many points would it carry?Very good information to know. Thanks Walt! How about eye color? It would be a 2 point deduction to have a mulberry/gypsy face if red is the specified color when the Standard is accepted.

Thanks Walt! How about eye color?
Walt, the part about the Mulberry signifying too much Melanizers is in my mind completely false. When I had Brown Red and Birchen Moderns the Dark face birds always had the nicest colored feathers and plenty of them. I guess we can look forward to another mess like the Black Copper.A typical Birchen has the mulberry face and lacing in the chest. Bev Davis has just told me that the Marans will not have the dark face nor the lacing in the chest. Walt, if Mulberry would be the accepted color then it would be a 2 point deduction for red, that is the way I read the SOP.It would be a 2 point deduction to have a mulberry/gypsy face if red is the specified color when the Standard is accepted.
