Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi

Some of the club members will be going to a show in Shawnee Alabama later this year. If you are a member of the Marans Chicken Club USA it will be announced before hand.

The silver Birchen Marans is a black bird with silver on it's hackle, saddle and wing bows. It has a red comb and wattles with golden eyes. The shanks have a pink dermis and slate epidermis. There is no lacing on the breast.

Very often when a bird is young it's face will look a bit on the dark side but as it gets older the red comes in and there' no sign of mulberry.

He knew they were pet quality, and not being stand offish, but what is the big deal, if he does come on here and ask question I thought that is what we were all here for, to pass on information we learned. He saw the color eggs they lay, as I had them with me. If you buy at a swap are you expecting to get SQ birds? Not me. Why is it a problem to pass off information. The ongoing problem I have found is that some folks don't ask questions, because those like you make us feel stupid, for asking or we don't ask. I was sold the eggs and no one informed me of the white tail thing. I had to learn by asking. I didn't fault the seller, I'm sure they know and are correcting the problem.

I see that you are NPIP certified according to your signature line. Do you have a web site or a farm name that you go by?

Wynette, Look forward to seeing you and Barb at Columbus. Your life will be changed for eternity.
Oh Wait.... I just can't let this one go by without asking...

Will their lives be changed by going to the Columbus show OR by seeing you Snowbird? ?

Ok, lets see if I can get photos to post. It doesn't always want to behave for me since the changed over the set up for loading them here.

First I'll show some red faced girls, of different ages. Most of these, particularly when breeding, are harder to get the color of the silver right and to have the full collar like they should.

Here's a red faced girl next to one of my blue birchen girls. A bit blurry, but still can see the face. These two are about a month or so apart in age in this shot. The blue being the older of the two.

Here's some of the darker faced girls. This one is on the lighter end of the mulberry for here, but if you notice, the color on the collar is nice. She was dust bathing so has some dirt and etc on her body, excuse her messiness.

Another girl with the fainter mulberry coloring, note the really nice silver collar

These are girls that have the most mulberry, these are different age birds, but all have nice silver collars as well and do get ones with the tiny bit of upper breast lacing. Hopefully these help a bit rather than confuse more.

Walt, take a look at the silver blue pullet in middle of page. What are the breeders supposed to do with the Mulberry face, comb, wattles and ear lobes . I realize the Marans do not have this look.

I don't know. This is something the Marans folks have to work out. I guess the question is...how many come out with mulberry faces, combs and wattles.....and why.

No just that we should never judge an olde bird in the bushes without taking a look first.
Considering the current environment on this thread, would that be a MULBERRY bush ? ?

Speaking of Mulberry bushes, I planted one outside of one of my chicken coops hoping it would provide shade for the coop AND food for the birds...
This is a very easy to grow bush / tree if anyone is interested. It is very fast growing too.
