Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok, lets see if I can get photos to post. It doesn't always want to behave for me since the changed over the set up for loading them here.

First I'll show some red faced girls, of different ages. Most of these, particularly when breeding, are harder to get the color of the silver right and to have the full collar like they should.

Here's a red faced girl next to one of my blue birchen girls. A bit blurry, but still can see the face. These two are about a month or so apart in age in this shot. The blue being the older of the two.

Here's some of the darker faced girls. This one is on the lighter end of the mulberry for here, but if you notice, the color on the collar is nice. She was dust bathing so has some dirt and etc on her body, excuse her messiness.

Another girl with the fainter mulberry coloring, note the really nice silver collar

These are girls that have the most mulberry, these are different age birds, but all have nice silver collars as well and do get ones with the tiny bit of upper breast lacing. Hopefully these help a bit rather than confuse more.

Vicki~ They are beautiful!

I am considering selling this guy off but am having a hard time letting go. It would make it easier if he was an awful example of a FBCM. I thought I would come here and share pics of him and you guys could tell me if you think I am letting go of something good or something 'meh'. Thanks! I do realize he has too many points on his comb but the rest of him- ahhh he just looks so good to me. He comes from great lines. He also has gorgeous orange eyes. Not sure if you can tell in the pictures. Oh and he is 21 weeks old.

had to add a close up

On the subject of breeding the Black, Blue and splash together. If you do this breeding method how do you keep records so you can breed forward with some kind of idea of what your are going to hatch. I believe a lot of the problems with the BC is coming from using them in such a way. The Black,Blue and splash is just what it says and I fail to see Black Copper in this group. The breeders them selves have caused all the BC problems and it will take a very dedicated effort to correct. Every time I see this it blows my feeble little mind. Enough said.

Sorry I am replying to a week-old post, but I've been putting up fencing and haven't had time for much else. My question is, if you are breeding blue coppers and folks think using black coppers produced from the blues shouldn't be used for breeding black coppers, what do you all do with those black copper chicks? Cull them all at hatch? Keep the pullet chicks and cull all the males?

Okay, I am new to this thread, and am trying to understand and learn and was just looking at the Marans club website... how do you tell the difference between a copper roo and a wheaten roo.. their differences look subtle to me, but my eye is untrained...

Thanks everyone, Nothing new on the last test so will stay overnight tuesday for a procedure and then they will plant the seed a few days after that. I might even fill up more breeding pens.
So are you typing this while you are still on pain meds ?
What are you going to fill the breeding pens up with?

It is good that nothing new showed up on the last test

The easiest way is to look at the wing.... The wheaten will have copper on the wing triangle....

The only things I can see for sure is
1.) He has plenty of leg feathering
2.) He has a long back
3.) It is windy as all get out where you live...

To render a good evaluation try to take some photos on a day not so windy.
Try to get some pics in his NATURAL stances... From the side, top, and back...

Ok this is even helpful lol! I will try again. The wind was horrible. It just kept blowing- it's been stormy here. Thank you so much. Be back soon!
