Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Oh how I wish the state would practice what they preach when talking about restrictions and enforce it, but they don't and this is one of the main reasons I won't show my birds.
I so agree with you. I have people get so upset cuz I will not allow people to walk around in my chicken yards to look at birds. I just tell them I have to maintain Bio security to protect my birds. Heck I don't even go in there without changing clothes and shoes and washing hands because we pick up so much gunck on our clothes and shoes from our everyday practices.

Honestly the disease we are seeing crop up more and more is because of the ease of transferring form bird to bird. I got a CDC alert the other day on the new castles disease cuz they are finding dead pigeons everywhere. So of coarse they want us Healthcare workers to educate people not to be eating these birds live or dead. Also the flu strains that are effecting people are A & B. VIVI

When I was raising show pigs it was a must to let buyers in my nursery and grow out pens. I kept these plastic shoe/boot covers at the house and made everyone that wanted to go down to the barn wear them. Made for happy customers and took the worry out for me. I could reuse these numerous times. Anyway, just a thought.

Oh Im so glad you posted that link. Ive been thinking about getting these type of shoe covers so I can have people wear then if they come into the chicken yard. I really need to get a better hang of practicing bio-security. My husband thinks Im crazy but I know Im just trying to protect my flocks. How do you go about cleaning them to reuse them? bleach and water solution?

Since they never left my place I didn't worry about cleaning them unless they were muddy. In that case the garden hose would do the job. These may not be the least expensive ones on the market. They are just the first ones that came to mind. The ones I used were blue and I don't remember where I bought them.

So, how many of you dry incubate your Marans eggs AND your other eggs?

I hatch EVERYTHING with dry incuabation, it works well for ALL the eggs but my Marans LOVE it. I have 100% hatches a lot. I try to keep my humidity at 35% or LESS. At hatch I don't much care about the humidity. 60% when I put them in and I have seen it get up to 80% during hatch.
