Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Always wanted to go to Australia and NZ. I have a couple that will put me up in their home in Brisbane, if and when I ever get the money to go! They are dog, duck, and lantern lovers, and quite the comedians. Now vicki, you know if you take your Marans down there, you are going to have to shave their legs, right??

haha too funny. I might do crazy things for my animals, but I draw the line at shaving a chicken's leg

I am still experiencing technical issues, so who knows how this post will turn out

I do not work with the Splash color. I will only comment on the roo's type.
His chest is not deep enough. It could be his pose in the pic is being effected by a very full crop.
I do not see a clear shot of his chest in the other pictures.

Also, his tail meets the back at an abrupt break instead of the smooth curve we hope to see in the marans.

It looks like he is standing at an arkward angle judging by the position of his feet on the ground. This could effect evaluations I would make on his make and neck.

Comb and wattle look to be proportional to the head and neck.
I really can not say anything else without better photos

This is my BCM that doesn't have copper and has the wrong colored ear lobes....ugh. Don't worry, her eggs are used for misc layer chicks and she is the broody queen so she gets to stick around. Her leg feathers are the best out of all of them though....lol

Nothing needs to be said on the above pullet since you spotted the white ear lobes :)
OBTW: Her tail looks pinched too.

Nice shape to this splash pullet. Her fluff looks a little too loose at the legs. Her back is nice and long. I can't tell, but I suspect her tail is not very open. A pic from the back would help determine this. Her comb looks small which is a good thing. She is too far away in the pic for me to see if anything funky is going on with the comb. Her legs look like there is none or barely any feathers on them.

just a quick addition, splash birds should have blue legs. I'm gonna try to attach a pic for an example if it will behave.

Genetically why is that? the blue legs thing.... and I think this is the first I have heard about white toe nails, why is that too .... I will have to go look at that one.... not on my list of things to look for.

I can't tell you specific genetic reasons, but can tell you that in any breed i've ever raised splash in, you will want blue legs. Those birds I've worked with that have the blue from experience I have an easier time breeding with them in terms of throwing more of what I'm wanting to breed forward. The white toe nails is something I noticed as I've been breeding the Marans and find that those that breed with the most consistency here have that trifecta on the feet, the medium to darker slate with pale pads and white toenails. For me it was a sign that I was making good progress, not only because of the quality of the birds I was producing, but I have birds from several different sources and as I've test mated them across sources and etc, the best offspring always have that leg/feet combo, minus the birchens of course. That's a whole different deal. haha

I never even noticed toe nail color till I got my Wyandottes.... they all have what looks like painted toe nails.... LOL
haha blame my noticing everything on my dad's training. I'm such a stickler now because of it. People always make fun of me here, particularly when I'm looking to buy stock and am looking them over.
