Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Beautiful eggs, i love them........... Sure is nice to see a variety of eggs......i come from a small hobby farm with a few cows and chickens. looking for a new breed , my 2 year old loves to collect eggs.....have a great day, il keep the marans in mind......

Seems to me it is always slow this time of year, when all the good stuff is going on I am to busy to keep up. I am feeling pretty good right now. I just spent the last 3 days cleaning the entire coop, rebanding all the pullets, photographing everyone, taking notes, deworming and separating in to breeding pens. Bring on the hatching season!!!!!

I haven't seen their birds, it would be good to look at their breeding stock. I followed this link and the first photo of a cockerel in the string of photos sure looks like he has a side sprig on his comb. Of course, hard to tell from pics, that's why it would be good to see the birds.

Hi Don, did that first male in the string of photos look like he had a side sprig on the back right side of his comb to you or am I just imagining things?
Boy you guys have better eyes than me! I hadn't noticed a thing on that pic before but I think you are right. However it looks like there's a bunch of boys growing out here, so I should have some to choose from!

If the male they used for breeding does have a sprig, keep a close eye and feel the combs also, on your growing birds. Sprigs multiply like wildfire (genetic fault). Do you know if they have only the one male or are there others they might be using for breeding? I'll tell you this, if you can keep more than one good male, do it. You never know when something might happen to your main breeder. Good luck with your birds.

Ugh, I caught a cold, I betcha at the poultry show on Saturday---incubation period about right, starting coming down with it yesterday. Haven't had a cold in a long time, hope this one doesn't hang around too long, I've way too much to do. I hope you didn't catch one there, Mary.

These guys have two seperate places and I saw at least three males. they work together and keep stock at both places in case something happens to wipe one of them out. The one in the pic you are talking about was at one place but the chicks I got were hatched at the other. As far as I know that one was not the one being used for breeding at least right now. But I will certainly keep an eye on all my boys growing out.The oldest ones I have are just now starting to show their combs so not sure yet how many I will have, but probably at least 12 altogether. I also have chicks from two other breeders so waiting for everyone to grow out right now. I plan to keep all the pullets, for layers if nothing else, then if possible at least two males from each breeders group at least to start with.
