Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hope your cold is gone & you are feeling better. I've been fine; wanted to tell you it was nice to meet you in person!

Thank you, it was nice to meet you, too. Always good to match a face with a name! Unfortunately, this is a bad cold. I have very little energy and a sore throat, too. Just in time for this upcoming 3-day cold snap, which requires extra work, like draining out the nipple water system so it doesn't freeze and crack the pipes.

What is the easiest way to test mate a lot of birds? trap nest right?
depends on your set up and pen limitations. Also on how many birds you are trying to do at a time to what males and etc. The catch with trap nests is that you need to be able to go fairly often to let them out. If you can do that, then you should be fine

oh that's no fun. I have regular waterers in my pens; no water lines out that far from the house. But I also have open water because I have ducks too. I just keep gallon jugs of water so if it's frozen when I feed in the morning I can just pour some in. Usually melts the ice too. Unless we get really super cold...... Hope you feel better soon!

I found this thread a couple months ago when I got my first Marans chicks in July last year (they were born on the 18th July)........what was so exciting and full of adventure when I first decided to find out what the 'SOP' even stood for was quickly challenged when I found out how little I knew and how much I needed to learn!!!! This thread can seem a tad daunting at times and so I became a 'lurker' and digested as much as I could. Any way, I am coming out of hiding bencause i am so, so, so excited to share Penelope (my BCM's) very 1st egg (in fact she laid 3 eggs in 4 days), 24 weeks and 5 days old - her 1st egg is the one on the left (as you look at the pic), 2nd egg in the middle and 3rd egg on the right! Super exciting!!!!!!
