Hi Don, do I remember correctly you saying you do the toe punch when the chicks are 2 weeks old? If not, when is the best age?

I do toe punching right out of the incubator, it is when their webbing is the most flexible and heals much quicker.Hi Don, do I remember correctly you saying you do the toe punch when the chicks are 2 weeks old? If not, when is the best age?
Huh....well I did that with 5 Black Coppers and I also put colored zip ties on them, thank goodness, because the hole seemed to have been gone/disappeared when I checked and re-punched at 2 weeks of age. And one of them, I think the hole may have been too close to the outside web edge, as there was no hole and the webbing seemed less, too, so maybe tore?I do toe punching right out of the incubator, it is when their webbing is the most flexible and heals much quicker.

HOW do you get in that little webbing? I am determined to do this. I just have not seen pictures or a video of it. I want to make sure I do it right.
Marcy, I read you have to make sure you remove the little piece of skin on each chick or it will grow back together.
did you use a leather punch or the tiny punch that they sell for chicks? If it was the tiny one, it often does close over.Huh....well I did that with 5 Black Coppers and I also put colored zip ties on them, thank goodness, because the hole seemed to have been gone/disappeared when I checked and re-punched at 2 weeks of age. you just hold the little toes apart and it makes getting the webbing into the tool much easier.HOW do you get in that little webbing? I am determined to do this. I just have not seen pictures or a video of it. I want to make sure I do it right.

I need to look for a leather punch. My hubby's is HUGE, I surely need a smaller punch.
haha, the one I have has been around as long as I have been alive. Its one that has a rotating wheel with a bunch of different sizes of punches. I use the smaller ones with no problem. I haven't used it the last couple of years only because I've done mass hatches at different times from the same matings, so bands were just as easy when they got older. I just kept them separate til I had made the first few rounds of culling.I need to look for a leather punch. My hubby's is HUGE, I surely need a smaller punch.
